-Imaginary Applause-

"Hello, everyone and welcome to Rockstar Cook! Today on the show I'll be teaching you the 'Recipe for Fame'." The rainbow headed Acha winked as he leapt up onto a log and addressed a bunch of frogs and toads who were less than enthusiastic to have been picked up and placed in front of the makeshift stage. "What is the 'Recipe for Fame'? Why, it's my own special recipe for a delicious sticky dessert dish that is sure to have your tastebuds watering." A toad croaked and Own laughed, giving him a winning smile. "Not much of a cook? Have no fear my friend, this Acha will get you on the path to success in no-time! All right lets see what we will need shall we.." At this point he hopped off the log and trotted around to the back, inclining his head downward and clamping a large leaf stem between his teeth. Backing up and around he slid the leaf out in front of the log to reveal his key ingredients. The frogs inflated their necks and began a small chorus but if it was for his grand display or, more likely, a predatory warning one couldn't quite tell. "Thank you, thank you! All presentation was done myself." Hopping back up on the log he continued.

"First, you want to cook this on a nice, hot, summers day. Starting early in the morning counts so you can get a decent cook time. The longer it sits in the sun the better. You'll need three or four apples and a generous portion of blackberries, blueberries, or both, smashed together with the apple seeds removed. You need to smash them very, very, well until they are kind of a paste. You can add more or less depending on how much of this tasty treat you want to make at a time." Stating this he began to pretend to smoosh an apple with his hoof and then gestured to each ingredient in turn. "Then, you take your wild sweet grass, in bulk, and squeeze all the dew out of it so it mixes up in there with your apple and gives it kind of a fresh, almost cool to the palate, taste that mixes nicely with the apple." The frogs blinked up at him, his movements obviously of some instinctual interest.

"Next, you'll want to mix your spices! Gather up your mint leaves, a small portion of ginger root, almonds, hazelnuts, mace, and as much honeysuckle honey as you can gather and mash all of this up into a fine paste as well. Mix your fruit paste with your spice paste until well blended." A frog croaked again which was followed by a small series of croaks and Own gave them all a stern look. "Please, hold all questions until the end of the show. Now, you will want to find the biggest, smoothest, cleanest, stone in the swamp and spread out a few big leaves, if you have a fire salamander this process goes much faster but the sun will do. Spread the leaves out to cover the rock completely and then smooth the paste out over the leaves as evenly as possible. Let your paste dry all day long in full sun. As it cooks it will become solid and a bit tacky to the touch, once that happens it is ready to eat. Viola! A tasty, sweet, sticky, chewy, treat that will have your fans swooning in no time. Enjoy!" The Acha grinned, bowing his head amidst the peeps and croaks before quickly losing interest in his little play and scampering off to find out where Ten had gotten to.

IC RECIPE CONTEST!
Chrystali // Dark Roast, Cappucino, Latte

ENTRY: Expanded on from a previous RP --
Winter Soup

1 medium tortoise shell
3 quail eggs
a beetleshell's worth of crushed milkweed roots
2 tubers, cut into chunks or mashed, depending on hoof size
1 large carrot, chewed to small pieces
2 leaves of coriander
1 stem of rosemary stripped clean

1 rabbit, shredded (if you'd prefer a stew)
a sprig of lemon verbena to taste (optional)
2 beetleshells of black chokeberry to sweeten (optional)

Collect enough dew/melted snow to fill the tortoise shell at least half way. Place on an old salamander nest for heat. Once the liquid starts to bubble around the edges, add the tubers. Once they're soft (test by pressing a branch against a piece: if it spears, it's ready; if mashed, look for the bubbling to start in the middle of the mash), add the crushed milkweed roots and the carrots (optional, if you want a bit of crunch) and stir with a branch. The soup will start to thicken. Break the quail eggs in the soup, stirring in the coriander and rosemary. When the rosemary's scent is mostly covered, you can take the soup off the heat and serve. Add chokeberry, lemon verbena or a snail shell to season.

Savory Meat Pies

First, collect as many edible seeds as you can find. Sunflower, wheat, rye, barley, oats, flax, corn, sorghum, spelt, and similar seeds are suitable. Choose a mix that is not too sweet or too bitter. You will need approximately half a tortoiseshell of seeds for each meat pie. Catch some small game. Multiple kinds of meat are preferable, for example birds and furry animals, but if you can only find one thing, that is ok. Use two pieces of small game (one if you find larger animals, such as hares) for each pie. Search for flavorful leaves, garlic, onions, and other ingredients to flavor the meat, to taste.

Place the seeds in a tortoiseshell and grind them to powder with your hooves. Slowly add fresh water to the tortoiseshell until a thick paste forms. Divide the paste into two parts; set one portion aside and spread the other in the bottom of the tortoiseshell.

Remove the skin/fur/feathers/scales, organs, and bones from the meat and pound it with your hooves until tender. If you have multiple kinds of meat, mix the meats together. Add any flavorful leaves, garlic, and/or onions you found. Spread the meat mixture on top of the seed paste. Spread the second portion of the seed paste over the top of the meat, and press the edges together to form a complete pie.

Place the tortoiseshell in the sun or cook over a fire until the paste is golden brown and the meat is fragrant. Serve warm.

Was Half Sleep any kind of actual food-preparer? No! Was she going to let that stop her? She'd like to see somebody try.

"Okay!" she huffs and puffs, hopping back and forth between two rocks, mostly to show off her stacked leg muscles. "The first thing about food is you have charge it with energy. Not weak, negative, last-place energy, but winner energy. You can do this by, obviously, fighting it to the death. The bigger the better. If your food isn't alive, you still have to beat it. Grass by the riverbank? Forget about it. That grass has been sitting around next to a big stream having life hoofed to it. If you want grass, you want the survivor grass. Grass that has been clinging to the top of a mountain with no food, or water, or anything but sheer determination."

Half Sleep starts doing pushups between the rocks, this time to let you get a better look at her rippling shoulders.

"After that, are you done? Sure, if you want to give up forever. You need to find a waterfall. This is not a puddle recipe. If you're going to drink water, it's got to be water that can lay the beat down on all other water. You can also substitute a whirlpool. Anything from a deadly vortex is fine. Now, there's no seasonings involved in this. This isn't a scavenger hunt. The only seasoning you need is Victory. And there's only one way to get that."

She looks you dead in the eye.

"You think you've earned that food? No. You're going to bet it. You challenge the next kin you see to a feat of strength, or speed, or whatever, their choice, because even in whatever they choose you are still going to beat them. Only the victor of that challenge deserves a mouthful. And when it's you, you eat every bite in front of them so they know what Victory looks like. It doesn't look like preparation time, or fancy flowers, it looks like you completely dominating."

Half Sleep pops up perkily from the rocks, looking like she's ready to go for a meal now. "Want me to go over it again?"

Peaches and Cream loved to create. The changing of the seasons, especially fall, was his favorite one. Granted, he had to deal with the less tender of ingredients but that didn't bother him at all.

Humming, to himself, his faithful chicken at his side, the buck went about to collect anything that might be useful. Around his neck was a caiman-skin pouch to keep it all together. On this trip, he collected:
-two mouthfuls of ripened blueberries
-half a mouthful of blackberries
-three raspberries (someone must have already harvested them)
-four strings of lightened moss (they had some good nutritional value)
-a hoof-size amount of swamp corn
and finally
-a turtle shell for later.

Once back at his creation station, he brought out two eggs and a third-full bamboo stalk of donated milk. He took out another turtle shell for mixing. Whatever he needed to borrow, Rise and Shine would allow him to use. This was a fruitful arrangement (no pun intended). In this shell, he put the eggs and milk, tied a small roughened branch to his hoof and started to whisk until it was light and frothy.

Bringing out a pit-eaten rock, he gently took out the dried swamp corn and started to grind it with him hoof. Once that was done, he did the same for the moss. The trick with the handing moss is it needs to be fully dry and have those lighter buds for taste. The moss part itself was bitter, but it helped keep a kin slimming.

He mixed the dry ingredients in the new shell and then added the wet. Carefully, he folded in the berries. Setting it all in his custom-made hovel. It was made of dried clay and had two parts. On the bottom, he put coals, and the top part was open so it would cook evenly. He took some wet leaves and lay it over the opening. This kept the heat in.

Peaches and Cream timed the cake by how many times the wet leaves had to be replaced.

This particular creation needed five replacements, more than usual. The result was a succulent, berry-rich cake. After letting it cool, he took it to other members of the tribe. As usual, he would share his creation - for he got his joy from the making of it.

Eat up!
