What is Fires Over Pern?

Fires Over Pern is a roleplay-intensive B/C environment loosely based on the books of Anne McCaffrey’s Pern series.

What is Pern?

Pern is a world colonized by humans. After their arrival, the colonists found that the world they’d claimed had an unexpected challenge- a space-borne microorganism they called Thread. Thread spores enter the atmosphere, expand into long, silvery filaments, and consume any organic matter they come in contact with. In order to protect themselves, the colonists took some of the local wildlife- small, flying animals that could breathe fire- and genetically engineered them to be large enough to carry a rider, to form an intense telepathic bond with one single individual, and to have the innate, powerful urge to burn Thread from the skies. Thus were born Pernese dragons, and those individuals to which they bonded upon hatching became their riders.

Over time, the colonists lost much of their history, but the cycles of Threadfall continued.

How Tightly does Fires Over Pern adhere to Pern canon?

This is a loose canon shop. We assume all events up to the discovery of AIVAS and the subsequent attempt to end Threadfall permanently, at which point our own history takes over. Fires canon will always trump Pern canon in terms of gameplay, character creation, or the settling of disputes. Our detailed history can be found in our guides, and a quick-and-dirty breakdown of our setting can be found in the following post.

What is the B/C Aspect of Fires Over Pern?

Fires Over Pern will offer a variety of pets. The primary focus is, of course, dragons. Dragons come in five colors, and three of the five have the potential to breed and have offspring. Additionally, Fires Over Pern will offer firelizards (the progenitor species for dragons), whers (an offshoot species created during the experimentation process to create dragons), genetically-modified felines, and specialized breeds of wherries (Pern’s answer to birds), which will also be breedable. Pets in Fires Over Pern need to be bonded to a human character in order to be roleplayed in our setting.

Additionally, while they are not pets as such, players will have the opportunity to design ships and flags as well as military units and insignias, which will have specialized games and opportunities to gain experience and become more impressive over time.

What Do We Mean by Roleplay-Intensive?

Fires Over Pern encourages players to be active in the roleplay aspects of our environment. While it is not strictly roleplay required, activity will unlock certain additional privileges and special pets. Fires Over Pern will track player activity, letting players earn their way toward characters with rank and influence in the game. Once a player has earned a roleplay-unlocked pet, their pets will not be taken away for failure to continue to roleplay- they will, however, be transferred to an ‘inactive’ area of the game, and there will be roleplay requirements to reactivate them at their previous level of influence.

The reasoning behind this system is to allow us to build a roleplay environment in which every character is important, and every player has the opportunity to build a dynamic story and contribute to the overall plot and direction of the shop.

Our Story

After the discovery of the supercomputer AIVAS, and the presumed destruction of Thread, Pernese culture entered a period of rapid, overwhelming change. Helped along by historical records and relics of Earth culture pulled from AIVAS’s databanks, the previously community-minded global culture fractured, and with land and resources that had previously been too dangerous to settle, explore, and exploit no longer needing the protection of dragonriders, a take-what-you-can attitude developed in the Holds and Weyrs. Expansion was rapid, poorly planned, and frequently contested.

War and religion, two things the original colonists had hoped to leave behind, found new life in the fertile ground of a changing world. Things grew so bad on the main continents that a group of desperate, determined people formed a company to attempt to colonize Far Western- two large islands anchoring a long string of smaller islands that spread nearly the full longitude of Pern.

The colonists landed, and first founded Forlorn Hope Weyr, which remains the oldest of the active Far Western settlements. A decade later, they founded Ironfall Hold, named for the red waterfalls which pour out of the cliff-face below the Hold, colored by rich iron deposits nearby. For nearly seventy Turns, Far Western developed, grew, and thrived, trading with the Holds and Weyrs of Northern and Southern for whatever they could not produce.

Then, Threadfall. No one expected it; for a time, those not directly affected refused to believe it. Fishing fleets and trade ships were lost by the dozens. Outlying cotholds, built of wood in the wake of the triumphs of earlier centuries, fell in waves. Tens of thousands of lives were lost, infrastructure was destroyed, and Pern was brought to its knees. Dragonriders, long since having taken on different roles, taking up crafts or working transport, suddenly found themselves in the position of having to relearn much that had been lost. Dynasties fell; new powers rose. Slowly, slowly, the people of Pern rebuilt, but what was did not strictly resemble what had come before.

Far Western, still relatively young, weathered the transition with determination, if not grace. Half of Forlorn Hope had to be rebuilt, and much of the population of Ironfall retreated into the tunnels carved between the docks and the clifftop Hold. They persevered, however, and found they had an advantage that even few of the Weyrs had. Far Western’s dragons bred quickly, and laid large clutches- and several of the islands closest to the main islands had easily accessible firestone. With time and practice, their dragonriders were able to cover not only the critical population centers, but some of their ships as well.

Far Western began to expand, while other Holds and Weyrs struggled just to maintain patches of the immense territories they had claimed. For a time, there was a relative level of peace, with the people of Pern too busy trying to survive to make war. But with recovery came renewed hostility, and tensions began to rise once more. People from war-torn regions of Northern and Southern fled to Western, and a new Weyr was founded on a large island well to the south of the two main islands. Sanctuary Weyr greeted the new arrivals, and Far Western’s alliance grew stronger.

This was not to the liking of everyone; several of the old powers began to view Far Western as a threat. Direct military attacks were difficult; Far Western’s abundance of Gold dragons made flying in enemies all but impossible, and Far Western’s well-protected navy was easily the equal of any other. Southern Hold, seeing this, tried a different approach- sabotage. ‘Refugees’ arrived from Southern, and in their wake, food stores were spoiled, clean water reserves poisoned, dragon eggs cracked.

Outraged, Far Western retaliated by closing their borders, and implementing new safeguards. Refugees seeking shelter in Far Western had to seek out those members of the Trade Guild who were still permitted passage; a series of checkpoints was established along a particular route to Sanctuary Weyr. Anyone who approached from a different route took their lives into their own hands; Far Western grew zealous about their security, and it soon became clear that the path referred to as Sanctuary River was the best option for anyone genuinely searching for refuge.

Five hundred Turns after the return of Thread to Pern, the political landscape is shifting once again. New threats have grown within the borders of even the most secure Holds, a subtle power is seizing control of Holds and Weyrs alike, Thread remains unpredictable and immensely destructive, and the strength of Far Western- the strength of the alliance between its major Weyrs and Hold- is faltering for the first time in its four-century history.

What the future holds, no one can be certain.

Our Pets

Dragons:
Dragons come in five colors- Gold, Bronze, Brown, Blue, and Green. Golds and Greens are female; Bronzes, Browns, and Blues are male. Golds lay eggs, Greens do not. Bronzes and Browns have a chance of catching a Gold during a mating Flight, and thus siring a clutch. Golds Impress only to women, Bronzes Impress only to men. There are no other gender or sexuality restrictions at Fires Over Pern. Gold dragons are the largest dragons, make up around 1% of the dragon population, and cannot breathe fire- instead, they have the ability to command other dragons. Bronze dragons are the next largest, and make up around 4% of the population. Browns sit in the middle of the size spectrum, and make up 15% of the population. Blues are the second smallest, making up 30% of the population. Greens are the smallest of the dragons, and make up 50% of the total dragon population.

All dragons will have a stat block that will be used in in-shop games.

Firelizards:

User Image

Firelizards, like dragons, come in five colors, Gold through Green. Unlike dragons, Gold firelizards can breathe fire, and Green firelizards can lay eggs. Firelizards are very common across Pern, and can form an empathic bond with the first person to feed them.

Whers:
Whers come in the same colors as dragons and firelizards. Whers have eyes which are very sensitive to light, making them primarily active at night. Whers, unlike dragons, don’t necessarily bond to a handler immediately, and wild whers do exist. Once they have bonded, they are fiercely loyal and protective, but they can potentially re-bond to a new handler if something happens to their old handler.

Felines:
Smart, strong, and oversized, felines are dangerous and unpredictable hunters. Kittens are capable of forming an empathic bond with a strong-willed and receptive individual, similar to a wher. Felines will not re-bond if they lose their handler, however, and will quickly go feral once their bond is lost. Wild felines pose a serious threat to human life, livestock, and even the occasional unwary dragon.

Wherries:
Song Wherries: Song wherries are small, herbivorous wherries that can be tamed. They come in a variety of bright colors, make pleasing noises, and can occasionally be trained to return to a particular place- if one does not have a firelizard, such wherries can be a way to pass messages.
Hunting Wherries: Hunting wherries are predatory wherries which can range in size. Careful breeding and handling has produced hunting wherries that will cooperate with a handler, and assist with hunting and scouting. Hunting wherries can be unpredictable, and most breeders will not permit one of their wherries to go to someone who has not extensively trained in the proper care and handling of such creatures.

Forlorn Hope, Ironfall, and Sanctuary

User Image

Forlorn Hope:
The oldest of the three major settlements in Far Western, Forlorn Hope Weyr prides itself on its history and its steadfastness. Forlorn Hope’s records stretch back to the founding, and the Charter of Far Western is given a place of honor in its archives. Of the three major settlements, Forlorn Hope is the most conservative; emphasis is often placed on how long an individual’s family has been present in Far Western, and ‘newcomers’ are often looked upon with suspicion. This has led to a slightly strained situation within the ‘elite’ of Forlorn Hope, as the Senior Weyrwoman is herself a refugee who arrived only a few Turns before her unexpected elevation in status.

Forlorn Hope Weyr is built into the sheared-off face of a mountain, standing about a mile away from the nearest coast. It is built on a grand scale, with the Sands cavern easily able to accommodate several clutching Queens, and the Landing Field outside designed to hold a half-dozen Wings at once. Two curved walls anchor against the mountain itself, reaching out to protect a large, teardrop-shaped space that is the external portion of the Weyr proper, made from stone excavated from the tunnels and caverns of the internal portion of the Weyr. Massive, stone-covered pens take up much of the external space, where livestock can be driven during Threadfall.

Ironfall:
Ironfall stands as the heart of Far Western’s trade network, and the Hold is a complex, often contradictory place, divided into three distinct strata. The Docks, located in a massive, hollowed cavern to protect ships from the risk of Thread while exchanging cargo, play host to the industrious and the dishonest alike. The Undercity, a disorganized warren of tunnels and chambers that stretches along the main tunnel-road between the Docks and the High Hold, is alternately well-maintained, ventilated, and lit, and dark, dirty, and dangerous. Several groups- some efficient and well organized, some not- of criminals compete for territory and opportunity in the Undercity, and their conflicts do not always stay below-ground. The High Hold itself is expansive, crowning a clifftop with a brilliant view of the shipping lanes and the neighboring island, and the city walls back up against the low rise of a hill. Sprawling estates for the wealthy and influential spill over the rear wall and up the length of the hill, while cultural centers define a half-dozen districts within the high walls.

Character Advancement and Unlocks

Detailed Guild Thread: (Under Construction, Information Subject to Change) Here

Activity Points: Activity points are accrued by participating in roleplay, events, games, and contests at Fires Over Pern. Once earned, activity points are permanently associated with you as a player- they can only be revoked in situations where major rules have been broken. Activity points remain even after periods of inactivity.

Custom Tokens: Custom tokens are given out as contest prizes, during games, and at staff discretion. Custom tokens can be collected and redeemed for higher leveled custom tokens, used to create a custom character or pet of various types outside of a Custom Event, or used to 'level up' an existing character (for example, allowing a Journeyman to become a Master). Once a custom token is spent, it is gone.
