I'm teaching American English to this girl, since she'll be studying there, but regularly they learn British English. Sadly speaking isn't really part of their classes, so it's a little difficult for her, but she...isn't the best student regularly either. I've been working with her regular teacher to try and work out a plan, but....I'm really concerned for her. orz

Have you taught her any slang? I know it's not proper language skills but its quite practical. I've dated a few guys from China and the Philippines and American slang, even the most basic everyday slang confuses them. When one heard my mother say she was going to "run some errands" he asked "What is an errand? How do you run it?"

I wish I could, if she could understand and speak any at all. It takes her about 10 minutes to reply to simple questions, complete with me having to translate to Japanese. It's really frustrating, but....I'm really doing all I can. If her level was higher, I definitely would, but I've got to get her speaking level up before then.
