At my old highschool, it's the Juniors' responsibility to plan prom, raise the money to hold it, and then put it all together as a gift to the Seniors. Last time I heard, the juniors were still raising money by selling magazine subscriptions. When it was our turn, my class BROKE ALL SCHOOL RECORDS, raising all kinds of dough for prom. Our prom committee was made up of some really frugal and creative people who decided to save money by holding Prom at our school in the cafeteria (not as bad as it sounds! When it's not a cafeteria, it's where orientations and awards ceremonies are held, and it's connected to the courtyard!), and got the coolest art teacher in the universe to DJ. He told everyone who was going to attend prom that if they wanted to hear a specific song to get him a cd so he could check the song out and add it to his playlist. The prom committe rented fountains and a couple of horse drawn carriages, got the male teachers to escort girls into Prom, and totally went wild with the decorations. It smacked of fabulousness, I can't even tell you! Even though my date ditched me for a freshmo, and I looked a hot mess, and the only slow dance I got was with one of my gayer than hell friends (and man, he was a sight! White poet's shirt, black slacks and blazer, spiked collar, MY zip-up high heel boots, glittery makeup, and my black lace gloves), it was worth the time and money.
