The ball to show off the guests of honor has been concluded with minimal incident. Each lady was able to dance with the prince, the gentleman the princess, a minimum of once, though most would have gotten the chance to turn several times. Noblemen and women made small talk, most with nothing more than curiousity, though a few will ill intent. They, after all, would have wanted to marry into the throne themselves during this auspicious time. But no matter. It was not their place.

The day passed smoothly. The ladies would have joined the princess, getting a feel for the daily routine of the humanitarian princess, helping those in the immediate city while planning for the country side. The gentleman would have had a swimming good time, accompanying the prince as he was scheduled to attend a fantastically boring budget meeting with the King and his Advisors.

Dinner was served to the group of ten, the six guests and the four royals, just before sunset. After, the evening was to be used how they would like. Sleep? Chat? Date? Explore? The choice is yours.

It is now the evening of September 2nd, shortly after sunset. The skies are clear, and its a beautiful late summer evening. Etana has retired to her room temporarily, with the suggestion that she may or may not be joining them later that evening.

The rest o the ball had been a rather quiet affair. He had danced with each girl in turn, talking with them as he tried to get a feel for who they were rather than what they wanted him to see. All, however, seemed to have nerves that were just as bad as his were or worse, so there was little he could actually tell. He had, however, suggested an activity they do together, and this, he supposed, had made impromptu plans for each of his dates with these women.

Now he just had to find the right times….

Maybe he should have made arrangements for that very evening, get this thing started off on the right foot for all involved, but he was tired. He had taken what was considered one too many turns around the dance floor with his elder sister, talking about their options in the candidates in hushed tones, and been called to speak with his Father in the office later, once the guests had begun to leave and retire. Needless to say, the meeting had been… strained, and left Zak further on edge. Being locked into his room (on the pretext of protecting the guests and everyone else in the palace—Ha! Brilliant), apart from his sister, had not made things easier, and he had ended up drifting, eventually, leaning up against the door frame, wishing he could be in there with her.

So, it had been a rather long and rather stressful day but not an overly bad one, all things considered. Things could have gone a million times worse, and he was well aware of that, but, thankfully, his father had stood aside, and let Zak do what he needed. A few rough lessons on art of filing paperwork and speaking in a budget meeting, and a ‘proper’ tour of the castle later, he felt like he hadn’t accomplished much. The young men seemed fairly well receptive as well, though how well his teachings were remained to be seen. All in all, he was tired, and was not sure he could do justice to his first dating experiences as such.

Dinner had been uneventful, but he longed to escape, to relax, and do something for himself for once. He sat stiffly on the sill of an open window overlooking the grounds in the great room upstairs, a violin in his hands. He had been fiddling with the strings, tuning it until moments ago, turning his gaze outside as the moon peaked over the line of trees, starting its ascent into the heavens above. It looked to be a truly peaceful night. Thank the stars. He needed this after last night.

Now if only he could figure out which girl to ask out when. When should he take Ayume on her walk around the gardens? Was there a concert playing soon that Daciana would enjoy, or would they make their own? Would Lynnea find it proper to be seen at a zoo of sorts to see and interact with exotic animals? And how. How did he ask the girls out properly in the first place?

                                          Ugh. Stress.

He turned the violin around in his hands, placing the delicate instrument under his chin as he closed his eyes. This was his escape. And if the others didn’t like it? Well… they could go elsewhere. That was his thought. Amazingly enough. The bow whispered across the strings, pulling at the strings to play a melancholic piece that made his heart sing.

You could be my luck. Even if the sky if falling down, I know that we'll be safe and sound.

I could fill your cup. You know my river wont evaporate. This world we still appreciate.
You could be my luck. Even if in a hurricane of frowns, I know that we'll be safe and sound.

The night dragged on for a little while longer, but that was alright. By the time she ended her dance with the prince and moved on to dance with Wren, she was a lot more confident in her steps, even though she still messed up from time to time. They smiled and talked and even laughed a little before the night came to a slow close as the nobles left and everyone turned in for the night. After she was in her room, it was time to just relax, though the room was so huge and spectacular that she was almost afraid to mess it up, almost afraid to crawl into the bed after she'd changed from her formal attire to her sleep ware, but she did. The bed was probably the most comfortable thing she'd laid on in her whole entire life, but despite how comfortable the bed had been and how utterly exhausted she was, she still couldn't sleep. Her mind whirled with things to come as she laid there in the dark, her eyes peering into the silent darkness, but finally, sleep took over, with thoughts of the ball still vividly in her mind.

The morning was as it always was, early and swift. She got up just before the sun and watched the sun rise through the window, reveling in the beautiful colors of the new day. What day could possibly get worse when it started so wonderfully? Daci slipped into a light blue dress that flowed around her figure before she left the room to attend the morning 'classes' with the princess. As much as she hated it, the woman kept getting getting distracted from her lessons as she admired the beauty of the palace around her, getting lost in the intricately crafted

By the time dinner rolled around, Daci was feeling a little worn out already, craving for an escape into her music that she craved so badly, but sadly, she hadn't been able to get away long enough to get anywhere near the seruling that was in her room. A gift from her older brother who had saved up to get it for her before she left. She ate with the rest of the people and after dinner, they dispersed. As Ana began toward her room to retreat into her own little piece of heaven, music drifted to her ears. A sad, melancholy tune drifted to her ears, making her freeze in her tracks and turn toward the music. A few steps toward the sound and she stopped, afraid that she might be invading someone's privacy, but... Her feet began to move on their own volition. Daciana stopped in front of the door before lightly pushing it open to peer inside, her mind wanting so much to know who was playing such a sad tune. Her eyes landed on Zak, violin in hand as he looked like he was in his own little world. Instead of bothering him any more than she had by opening the door, she stood there and listened to the melody that rang in her ears.

I fall asleep to dreams of home. Where the waves are crashing. The only place I've ever known. Now the future has me.
I see the fire in the sky, see it all around me. I said the past is dead. The life I had is gone.Said I wont give up until I see the sun.

Waking up and letting go to the sounds of angels. Am I alive or just a ghost? Haunted by my sorrows.
Hope is slipping through my hands, gravity is taking hold. Said I'm not afraid, that I am brave enough. I will not give up, until I see the sun.

Hold me now. 'Till the fear is leaving. I am barely breathing. Crying out, these tired wings are falling. I need you to catch me.

Caius had taken to the dance rather well. He'd enjoyed himself thoroughly, and even been privileged enough to dance with the Queen of all people. What he might have missed with the princess was made up for by that fact. That, and he'd been fed a few pieces of lovely information. Nothing really of consequence, but it was more than most knew about the realm's most eligible bachelorette. Caius considered it a slight edge. To be honest, he didn't figure he really needed it. It wasn't fair, but typically, gypsies didn't abide by rules and stick to an honorable code.

That night, Caius danced with more than his fair share of women. After he'd had time with the prominent females, he'd taken up dancing with random women around the room, taking especially to the ones that looked lonely, sitting all by themselves on the sidelines. He'd given each of them a flower, asked them to dance, and laughed the night away, seeing a new face every five minutes.

His feet were sore by the time the ball was concluded, and Caius was escorted up to his room, one arm slung over a serving boy's shoulder as he escorted the slightly drunk redhead to bed.
He'd changed out of his stiff clothes and fallen into the mattress, dead to the world by the time his head hit the pillow.

The next morning, Caius awoke to a maid poking him in the side gently. The redhead groaned, and caved to the maid's wishes, and got up, letting her primp him for the day. He'd bathed, shaved, and dressed, and was sent down to breakfast before lessons began.

To have been honest, Caius would have rather been trampled by a horse than sit through lessons. He was stuck in stiff clothes - again - and dragged through the most boring of boring things that the prince could come up with. Being a royal was seemingly not all glitz and glamor. He suffered through the day, looking forward to reprieve from the monotony that the prince was so keen on spewing, and was in dire need of some fun by the end of dinner.

Caius had ditched the tie post-dessert, and shed the suit jacket, unbuttoning the stiff dress shirt to the middle of his chest before heading to the nearest large room to inspect it. Of course, the prince had given the men the tour of the castle hours prior, though Caius was eager to explore it himself. He'd ended up in what seemed to be a treasury with art, sculptures, and other finery in it. Go figure.
He walked in, and began inspecting the goods, hands itching to stuff as much as he could into his pockets and head out the nearest window without a backwards glance.

I hope I don't look silly in this dress...

    tab tab tab
tab tab tab By the time the night had ended, she'd danced with all the selected people. She'd decided throughout the time to be wary of Caius, that Wren was a sweetheart, Ryoga had layers (kind of like an onion), and Zac didn't like interacting with people period: other than his sister.

tab tab tab She'd allowed the help of undressing, had visited the hot springs bathroom, soaked the soreness away and gone to bed. She'd forgotten about the weather, and she'd fallen asleep as soon as she hit the pillow, leaving her fears for being alone completely forgotten.

tab tab tab That was until thunder that shook the doors to her balcony made her jolt straight up. She'd panicked. The lightening had light her room, the storm had completely over taken them in the night. The terror had made her black out.

tab tab tab The handmaidens had found her inside her wardrobe the next morning, curled up in a ball, a black bruise forming at her temple where she'd bashed her head over and over against the wall in a daze of fear, black circles around her eyes where she'd been sobbing for hours as thunder rocked her world over and over through the night - and she was completely and utterly alone. It hadn't died down until the wee hours in the morning - the muggy air lighting itself.

tab tab tab Needless to say it'd caused a rukus. It had taken four handmaidens to get her ready today. They'd styled her hair to cover the bruise - using extra products and pins to hold it firmly in place. She'd dazedly gone through her lessons and now it was after a dinner wher she'd hardly touched her food. She'd escaped to her chambers - where she'd found a giant stuffed animal with a note pinned to it: I thought that maybe the stuffed panda would make a good cuddle buddy for you Lady Ayume. I hope she serves her purpose, and protects you through the nights to come.

    Ariel

tab tab tab One of the handmaidens. She looked at the red panda and for a moment fought back conflicted tears before turning and grabbing her clothes. She went and took a bath, dressing in a simple outfit of a black tank top, and blue short-shorts. Something she would sleep in... before grabbing the redpanda (who though it was almost as large as Ayume, she was quite comfortable to hold.) She'd wondered around the palace halls, her damp long hair stuck back in a pony tail until she'd come into a room full of arts - and... A beautiful bay window! She went and smiled, going to the window, pleased there were already pillows in place and nestled in, looking out at the clear skies.

tab tab tab And it was here she was content to be alone - exhausted, resisting the urge to rub the bruise on her temple. It really hurt. Then..the door opened and she looked over curiously as she watched Caius enter. She felt suddenly inappropriately dressed and she hugged the red panda closed to her chest. Ah...well he didn't seem to notice her yet. She debated for a moment, before deciding it would be rude if she did not say something. "Good evening, Lord Caius." She said in a soft shy voice, wondering how this would appear to him.

Caius had barely made it to the first painting to inspect it when he'd heard a voice. A somewhat familiar voice. The illusionist straightened out, his crimson eyes coming to focus on the pink-haired pretty girl. Dressed.. for bed..? Caius blinked but took it in stride and approached the girl casually, tucking his hands into his pockets. "Just Caius." The redhead corrected. Lord was too much of a title for a humble thief and/or magician.
He smiled at her all the same, however, and put his eyes on the large stuffed animal she toted with her. "Miss Ayume wasn't it?" Caius thought back, trying to remember if that was actually her name or not. He had drunk a lot of wine last night and it was impairing his memory. Had he had a chance to dance with her? He would have remembered that... surely. She was so.. tiny.
"What are you doing in the treasury this late at night? And not adhering to dress code?" Caius chuckled, fully aware that he wasn't sticking to dress code, either... but it was rare to see a girl like that wearing anything less than a gown of the finest make. He preferred the more natural state of things, and would have been much happier strutting around nude than adhering to dress code of stiff shirts and such, though that was generally frowned upon in high society. It made him lust for the simplicity of nomadic lifestyle. Natural was how it always was.

"No matter. I won't tell." He winked at her and ran a hand through his hair, flashing her a charming half smile. "Not drawn to a music room or something similar? I'm shocked."

    Ready for bed!

tab tab tab Ayume nodded at him quietly when he corrected her for calling him Lord Caius. His hands in his pockets, his posture straightening he approached her casually - lingering just far enough for her to not feel uncomfortable. When he clarified her name, she smiled, and let out a little scoffing noise."Just Ayume." She told him with a little sheepish shrug.

tab tab tab It was appropiate after all. Neither of them were lords or dames. She suddenly blinked when he asked what she was doing here, and then mentioned the dress code, and she shifted a bit, tucking her small body self-consciously under the stuffed red panda, her cheeks turning pink.

tab tab tab "I hate those corsets. And the gowns are so heavy. They don't realize that one of those dresses doubles the weight I carry. I'm...I'm small! This...this is comfortable." She said frowning a bit, tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear. She didn't realize that this action would reveal the deep bruise on the side of her head, then her worried expression faded easily into a smile when he winked at her, saying he wouldn't tell.

tab tab tab She tucked her legs up, her porcelain skin otherwise unmarked as she patted the cushions on the bay window. "Would you like to have a sit?" She offered awkwardly, then sighed unhappily as he asked playfully why she was here and instead of a music room.

tab tab tab "What good is a room full of instruments to a person who cannot play them? I sing. I don't play. Besides - if what I understand correctly that's probably where one of the other girls and ...or... or and... the prince will be. That's... I don't ... I'm okay with being inadequate, I don't feel like venturing into areas where I'll be reminded you know? This room. It was pretty. And my tired body found the bay window inviting. What about you? This seems a shady place for an...what was it? Illusionist?" She asked, grinning at him.

tab tab tab She wouldn't have blamed him if he'd been having shady thoughts. One of these pieces could probably feed a small town for an entire week.

The redhead rubbed the back of his neck as she corrected him. Just Ayume. Right. Somehow that didn't seem right. Not juxtaposing her name with a title at least vaguely respectful felt strange. She looked like the type of girl that came from a good family that had a reputation. That was largely more impressive than 'the urchin magician taken in by a street dancer'. All things considered, everyone around him was probably better off than he was. That deserved at least some recognition.
Though Ayume had insisted... and Caius wasn't going to question it. "Ayume then." At least he'd gotten her name right.

She responded to his quip about her choice of dress by hiding herself behind the stuffed animal of the.. strange fox-looking creature that Caius couldn't identify. Whatever it was, it was too exotic to be common knowledge, and someone as simple as Caius had never come across one. Regardless, Ayume seemed to be more focused on his question, rather than the stuffed animal.
He got his answer, and Caius just gave a wry smirk. Corsets, eh? He could relate to the being uncomfortable, but not quite that far. Why women chose to put themselves through that, he'd never know. Sure, it looked nice, but naked women looked much nicer. Men rarely cared about what was on top, and cared more for what was underneath. Perhaps it had something to do with illusions itself. Hm.
Whatever it was, it didn't matter.

Caius watched Ayume as she spoke, catching a glimpse of a bruise on her temple as she brushed her hair out of her face. At first, it was hard to see, but became very apparent on second glance. Caius' lips turned down in a frown. What had caused that? He hadn't danced with Ayume previously, so he hadn't exactly gotten a good look at her, though he didn't seem to remember a girl with a rather large bruise somewhere quite obvious.
He said nothing, and let Ayume finish her words, putting herself down. Why were women always so eager to do that? Couldn't they be happy with themselves? All of them were beautiful, talented, magnificent beings.

First, Caius responded to her offer, and sat himself down casually beside her, bringing a long leg up to perch, half-lounged on the cushions of the bay window. He gave her a soft smile and propped his elbow on his knee that was raised, and gestured with a casual pointed finger at the bruise that had revealed itself. "And this, battle scar? Too much dancing went to your head? Or did you go the way of Etana and get bumped into by a servant? Or perhaps someone's knuckles?" It was a not-so-subtle way of asking if anyone had seen fit to abuse Ayume. If the answer was as much as he expected, Caius was going to have to see to it that they paid their dues.

Whether Ayume decided to answer at all was her prerogative. Caius' casual posture made no advances or put any pressure on her to give him a name, and simply expressed some concern behind his crimson eyes.
He moved on to her previous words and gave her another slow, charming smile in response. "Chances are if there are people there, they will know how to play those instruments and give you back up for your vocal talents." Caius nodded to himself and then leaned back some, bringing his hand back toward himself lazily. "I would not call that being inadequate."

Caius tilted his head back, and looked out the window, mulling on her final query for a moment. "A good magician sticks to where he is most comfortable. In the spotlight, in parties... but a great magician can make himself at home anywhere. In darkness, in a box, or even in handcuffs. I can assure you that a treasury is much more comfortable than any of the former..." He lazily closed his eyes and laughed a bit to himself as if enjoying a private joke with himself, and then turned his eyes back on Ayume. "I enjoy the company of expensive things." He admitted, finally.

tab tab tab She smiled when he chose to sit. sitting up and crossing her legs, positioning herself to where she could look at him better, now the large red panda simply draped in her lap. Then as he addressed her bruise her eyes cast down wards and she shook her head to each of his question. No, no, and no. She stayed quiet for a second, glad when he suddenly changed the topic, though it wasn't much better.

tab tab tab "Ah... I understand what you mean. But.. music is Dacianna's common interest with the Prince. I don't...want to impose on that. " She said smiling. "I may be completely relaxed about this 'competition'" she said, raising her hands and quoting it. "But the other two might be completely serious." She shifted a bit though, smiling out the window. In a way, Caius had complimented her.

tab tab tab She watched him carefully as he thought about his answer to her question, then began to talk about a good magician sticking to where he's comfortable. She laughed a bit at the handcuffs remark, and how a treasury was more comfortable than the places he mentioned. Then finally admitted he liked the company of expensive items. She looked around the room, and nodded. "They are very pretty aren't they? If you marry the princess, you'll never have to worry about the lack of accompaniment of expensive things again." She said cheerfully, smiling over at him.

tab tab tab She gave him a smile, then looked down at her hands. "I just enjoy company, period. Last night, I was afraid of being alone. Then when the storm woke me up I completely panicked. I dont remember really what was going on because I was so scared, but the bruise...I think I bashed my head against the inside of my wardrobe. It's..where I hid." She said a little sheepishly, looking a bit embarrassed.

The ball had been a small, quiet, peaceful event and once it was over and everyone retired to their rooms for the night, Wren had been feeling rather satisfied. He got at least one dance with the ladies and got to know them a bit, able to relax a little more after the initial dance and manage to enjoy himself. He was looking forward to possibly spending some time with the men the following day and getting acquainted with them as well, though he'd have to see what was planned for them the next morning. It was a small but nice group, pleasant to be around, and all in all his first night wasn't as tedious as he thought it would be. The other nobles did seem a bit stiff, though he couldn't imagine who wouldn't be; they must be so incredibly relieved when they were out of their formal attire.

The following morning brought with it a full schedule of meetings and new things to learn. Or not so new really. The lessons on filing paperwork was something that was not too dissimilar from what he had to do at the inn. Wren liked to think he had a fairly good grasp of economics, though it was nothing like the scale of what was performed here in the palace. There was more to keep track of, more variables to take into consideration, and at times during the meeting he felt himself to be overwhelmed.

But now, he was looking for something a little more exciting and stimulating than what he had been doing all day. His collar was relaxed, he'd chosen not to wear a tie or jacket and he was dressed as casually as he could under the circumstances. Wren only hoped that he wasn't making a faux pas but to be in a suit all day was something that he was still getting used to and he wondered if he ever would. The servants were helpful, but stiff and it was frustrating having to deal with them. He'd managed to get one of them to tell him a little about the grounds and discovered that the barracks were near by. This suited him well as he supposed that the soldiers and guards would be a little easier to talk to and would it would remind him of home. The stories the travellers used to tell in the inn, their energy and spirit. The only one of the men who seemed to embody that to a degree was Caius, and Wren hadn't had much time to really talk to him.

Making his way outside, Wren paused for a moment and took a breath of the fresh air, the gentle caress of air on his face. That moment of time just after sunset but before it was too dark to see was always quite calming. Looking at the shadows as they stretched over the land, stars just beginning to appear in the sky. There was a gentle buzz of insects all around, the gentle sound of violin music floating through the air, but other than that it was quiet. Too quiet. He was starting to miss the rowdiness of the inn. That and he could really go for a drink right about now.

Caius let Ayume speak, and was relieved to hear that no one had gotten handsy with her. Thunder, eh? Well, that was a new one. He supposed fear could manifest anywhere, however, and loud noises were probably quite common to be afraid of. He'd never seen thunder or lightning or rain as anything but refreshing. For someone as small as Ayume, however, he could see how she'd be scared to be alone. Caius had never felt that. Scared, sure. Alone? Very much so... but scared to be alone? Not quite.

Though he couldn't relate to her completely, Caius understood her point. "The next time there is a storm, you are welcome to spend it in my wardrobe." He gave her a kind smile and then chuckled to himself. "I'll be sure to line it with pillows for you." He ran a hand through his hair and looked out the window again, his eyes catching the moonlight. "And of course I'll be there, if you wish for company.. you need only ask." He smirked and looked down at himself. "I don't think I'd fit inside a wardrobe though.."

He sighed to himself as if enjoying the tail end of a joke, and looked back down at Ayume, addressing her previous concerns. "Why are all you girls so reserved when it comes to competition? Anna said the same thing, practically. I told her to shove you in a broom closet. Very viable option. I don't think you'd be able to get out." He chuckled good naturedly and surveyed Ayume, hoping she wouldn't take offense. "She said she wasn't worried about the whole affair, so I don't think she's that fussed if you'd rather intrude on the prince's time." Caius leaned back casually so that his back rested against the wooden window frame. "Alas, if you'd rather pass up on all of this-" he gestured to all the finery and then brought his attention back to Ayume, giving her a mischievous smirk, "and end up with someone that's practically penniless in comparison, like me, that is your decision to make."

    Ready for bed!

tab tab tab Ayume laughed at his offer for the next night there was a storm, she could spend it inside his wardrobe. But still, it meant a lot to her. She couldn't help the extra laugher when he said he'd line it with pillows, and that he was there for company though he may not fight inside the wardrobe either.

tab tab tab "Thank you. I'll remember that." She said, looking up at him appreciatively. Then he expressed his perturbation at the women being laid back about the competition. Apparently Anna wasn't fussed either. That was ...actually interesting to know. She let out a little smile, but then her mouth fell open when Caius admitted to telling Anna to shove her in a broom closet, then made a remark how he didn't think she would be able to come out.

tab tab tab But she let out a little astonished laugh, her eyes wide as she shook her head, her face full of incredibility. "That's so mean. I may be small but I can put up quite a fight you know!" She told him in a matter-of-fact voice, wrinkling her nose at him.

tab tab tab Still, the image of being shoved in a broom closet had Ayume laughing to herself, chuckling softly as Caius said that if the women wanted to pass out on the glories of riches to end up penniless it was their decision. She nodded at him, then shifted her position so she could lean forward and look at him intently.

tab tab tab "What good is marrying for riches if that would make me feel alone? I don't want to marry for money. I want someone who makes me laugh, who I can get along with, someone easy to talk too. I can be okay with being a commoner. I've been one my entire life. It's being rich that would take some adjusting too. To be frank I don't fancy being a princess if every day is as boring as today was. Only being in love would make a life as dreary as royalty seems to be worth it." She shrugged one shoulder and smiled at him bashfully though. "I guess we all have our different motivations though. Do you fancy Etana at all - riches aside?"

Caius cracked a smile as Ayume looked incredulous at him telling Anna to shove her into a broom closet. She was small, but feisty, apparently. Though, he still wasn't sure if she'd be able to get out if Anna tried to shove her in a broom closet. He chuckled to himself and shrugged. "Sorry, I've never been the best at advice.. and well, if I was a girl, and I was competing for the prince's hand, I would have shoved you in that closet a long time ago." He chuckled warmly, half joking and half not. He wasn't over cheap tricks when it came to competition.

He supposed it was a good thing he wasn't born female.

Caius turned his attention to Ayume's second point. What good was marrying for riches if one didn't feel wanted? He mused on it for a moment and then stretched out his long legs, considering it from her point of view. "But how will you ever find out if the prince isn't what you want if you spend all your time hiding from him?" Caius mused, digging in his pocket to produce a pack of cards after Ayume asked if he fancied Etana at all. Shuffling tended to help him think, his busy hands providing a comfort of sorts, helping him to sort things out as if he were performing a trick. "Well, I haven't had much of a chance to get to know her. Her mother on the other hand..." He chuckled, and moved the cards fluidly, stacking the deck without much effort. "I assure you it's not from lack of trying. She seems to have.. avoided me completely any time I decide to get close. Call it what you will. From afar, yes, she's an attractive woman, and from what I've heard about her, she's a good person. I'd like to know her, but I'm not so certain she'd like to know me." Riches aside, he wasn't sure he and any of the women there would be compatible. He'd never really given much thought to love or marriage, hence his being quite old, and being unmarried. He knew of lust, pleasure, friendship... but never love. It sounded a bit stupid to admit he didn't know what he wanted, further than to be rich.
Caius flipped the deck so that it was now face up, and fanned out the cards so Ayume could see them, and showed her the deck, now arranged perfectly in numerical order, in every suit, save for one. Spades, clubs and diamonds were all complete. Hearts had one card missing, which Caius produced from out of seemingly nowhere. The Queen of hearts, which he offered to Ayume. "Maybe I like someone else better."

    Ready for bed!

tab tab tab Ayume burst out in soft laughter at his admission that if he were one of the female suitors she would have been shoved into a closer a long time ago. She liked his brutal honest - even if he played it off as a joke. It was refreshing compared to what she had seen from everyone all day and the night before. He seemed real to her -and though she deeply enjoyed Ryoga's company as well Caius seemed more emotionally solid in his emotional instability in what he displayed. He hid nothing.

tab tab tab "I'm glad you're not my competition then. I'd hate to have to bite your ankles." She jested back with him easily, visibly relaxing. Then he made a solid point: How was she to know if she wanted the prince, or if the prince wanted, her if she avoided the places he'd likely haunt. She smiled at him thoughtfully, biting her bottom lip. Still. She didn't want to force anything. It was too much effort. She could just hang with Ciaus and watch him be a master of smooth. That would be far more entertaining.

tab tab tab He remarks about Etana though. Ayume nodded at him and frowned. "To be honest she's not been as friendly as she used to be. I think perhaps she's feeling ill at ease and is still coping. We each have our own way of doing so. I'm sure she will warm up soon. You're fun after all." She said as he shuffled the cards.

tab tab tab She was visibly staring at his hands, watching them. They were so deft and fluid in motion, if he had any slight to them she didn't see it at all. She blinked, then gasped with awe, her eyes widening in delighted wonder when he showed them to her. How...had he done that? And where was...? Ah... She beamed when he flipped the queen of hearts out to her and she took it, her happy amazement keeping her features delicately and innocently happy. "Perhaps I like someone else better."

tab tab tab Her eyes looked up at him then, carefully. Was...he flirting with her? She let out a small shy smile, then almost laughed at herself. No, why would he say that about her? He hard knew her! It was presumptuous to think that he'd been meaning her. He might have had someone he'd been longing for before he got pulled into this. Still she pulled the card close to her and looked out the window thoughtfully, biting her bottom lip, before turning to him once more. "Have you noticed the servants dont actually do anything we want them too? They just kinda do... whatever we DONT want them too? I keep asking to be taken to the gardens... And I'm ignored. Since...since we're already breaking the dress code together would... would you like to break a few more rules with me? I want to get into the green house." She said, grinning. Her voice had been almost shy when she asked him to come with her.

Ah. That never got old. The amazement and wonder in the eyes of his audience never seemed to fail. Caius was sure that if he weren't on the other side of the deal, it'd be much the same for him. Ayume watched him closely, and gasped when she'd seen the face card he'd given her. She took it, and grinned at him, and then carefully inspected his face when he'd mentioned that perhaps he liked someone else more. The idea behind both relationships and magic were the same. Always keep them guessing. It was shameless, yes, but it seemed to work.
Sure enough, soon after he'd said that, Ayume launched into a speech about the servants, which ultimately led to a 'do you want to go here with me' question. Caius smirked, and gazed out the window, peering outside into the dimly lit darkness. Caius slipped the deck of cards back into the sleeve from his pocket and returned the deck to its resting place, and looked back to Ayume, eyes lingering on the way she bit her lip. "Certainly." He cracked a smile and stood up, offering his hand to her. "Are you sure you want me to go with you because you want company or, is it just because I'm excellent at picking locks?"
He chuckled warmly and looked over his shoulder, through the room, suspecting there would be servants swarming the hall. Not really a viable option for getting outside. Not dressed like they were, anyway. "How do you feel about heights?" He asked offhandedly, looking out the window instead for an 'escape route'.
