Totally fine, do what you like. I switch back and forth between genders depending on what items I feel like using, avi theme etc. Why should I limit myself based on my real life gender?

It usually depends on whether you're going for a "masculine" or "feminine" design.
Sometimes designs for items are also different based on gender, which might impact your finished product.
