yeah but don't airbending masters get tattoos, in that case why were other young boys [from Aang's flashback] bald and yet they had no tattoo and weren't masters? I'd think they'd wait till when they do become airbending masters to shave that'd make the most sense imo. I honestly don't see why they'd shave before that.

I think it's mostly for the sake of identifying themselves as airbenders kinda like how forehead protectors in naruto symbolize that you're a ninja from a certain village (hope you know what i mean)

Did you at least skim through the link? Shaving the head shows commitment to spiritual life and to discourage vanity. It's symbolic.

Tenzin also says that it isn't mandatory for Air Nomads to do so and that it is purely optional, but only after Daw the first new Airbender discovered other than Tenzin's brother Bumi.
