How did Tenzin get his tattoos?

In the Legend of Aang, they made it sound like you needed to invent something first in order to become a master - what did Tenzin invent to become a master?
I have tried looking all over to find out what he did to earn them and I always come to a dead end!

The tattoos are given to all Airbenders when they pass thirty-six levels of Airbending. Aang had passed thirty-five levels, then invented the air scooter. Tenzin just mastered all thirty-six levels and then got his tattoos.

Hmm I was wondering the same thing..just saw the new series on my Xbox 360 it only let me see Book 1 Season 1 but it seems there is already a book 3? Guess I need to catch up smile

Well, he is Aang's only airbender son, so Aang was probably biased in making that decision, lol.
Tbh, Tenzin was probably a master in airbending so Aang was like, "okay"
