Well in the books Sherlock hates women
Thinks they are stupid
He only respects one women
It hints at him being homosexual in the book
It is though Arthur Conan Doyle was gay as well
Where in the books does it "hint at" Holmes being gay? I'd judge him as asexual.
And no, ACD is not thought of as gay. He thought homosexuality was a mental illness that spoiled the characters of several of his friends.
OMG! THank you!!!
I KNEW there was something written about Doyle who thought homosexuality was a mental illness or something but I couldn't find any proof of it, I thought it was something I misread or something several years ago and so when I was telling people on google plus that I didn't like the JohnLock couple someone pointed out that apparently, 'in the books', it hinted at gay relations and so I shouldn't be spewing crap about how Sherlock and John will never happen etc etc because it is 'in the books'. I have read half the books (should really read the other half) and I couldn't find any trace of there being a supposed 'gay vibe' between Sherlock and John or anything else and you mentioning the fact hat Doyle thought it a mental illness made me certain now that no, there isn't any gay relations in the books, it would make no sense to have them if the author didn't like homosexuality.
But also, back in that time, it was also still iffy that homosexuality existed, it was frowned upon, it was accepted a little but mostly people who were gay back in Doyle's time pretty much were the outcasts of the town so even if Doyle did accept it the rest of the time period did not.
You're welcome.
ACD had (at least) 2 gay friends, Oscar Wilde and Roger Casement, and stuck by them through their troubles with the law. Well, Casement's troubles had little to do with his sexuality, he was convicted and executed for treason for attempting to get the Germans to help with a rebellion in Ireland, but it is thought that his homosexuality may have been a factor in his being denied clemency. Wilde's legal troubles are well-known.
I've read all of them numerous times. I saved one story for a bit,
The Valley of Fear, but then my roommate spoiled it so I had to read it, lol.
You might find this little treasure by Rex Stout amusing.
"Watson was a Woman"
third page of article
Of course, it is very unlikely that Watson was a woman, you'd think the army doctors would have figured it out when he was wounded, but Stout makes some interesting points.
