OK, so Nate's mom, Raina Misoka, was...okay, how do I explain this in lamence terms...She was a Guardian (like the inhabitants of MU), but was evil, so she was sent to the Shinigami Realm. (She's the daughter of both the Guardian King and the Shinigami King. Note: Because she was a Guardian at one time, she was MUCH better-looking than the other Shinigami.) Since she often disobeyed the many rules, she left for the Mortal Realm (where we are), but had to be put under restraints unwillingly by the Shinigami King. And by "restraints" I mean put into a human-like vessel. (Like a human body, 'cept different once Raina was able to access only a little of her Shinigami powers later on.) Since she was orphaned at a young age because of her family being killed (by Shinigami, what else? Mass plague, of course.) she was sent to Wammy's House. There she met Lawliet, became friends, worked on cases together, yada yada yada. Yrs. later, one thing led to another, and...you know. (Hey, she was a rule-breaker.) You'll get more details when Death Note: Incarnate rolls around.
