in the show they ask the question but they were not sure why it happans.
shin then says that they dont believe or trust in their personas but it was just a thought they never said it was true
but it would make sense because his brother could still call his and not die when other people his age could not or if they could they had fused with thiers so shin may have been right

the older u get the harder it is 2 control the persona and that means you should not call on it or u could die, the suppressors help by calming the persona down older people use them so that their persona does not kill them or other people they know. u will learn more about the pills later in the anime and that Ryō Kanzato is very strong seeing that he can still call on and control the persona with the pills
(pills will eventually not be effective)
