If you're patient, you can get some free fish from the daily carts, but those won't earn you much.
They're a good start though.

If you want to make some money fast, go through the aquarium forums and find a good booty grab thread.

Depending on what type of fish you have, and if you put your aquarium in your signature, people can "tap" on it.
When you get enough taps, a game called Booty Grab (ahahahaha) shows up on your aquarium. People can then click on it and play the game, and you get a small portion of the money that they win.

Also, if you can find good enough aquarium threads, playing booty grab from other people's tanks can earn you tons o' moolah as well.
