I completely understand your OCD-ness. ^__~ I'm the same way when it comes to designing things.
Layering is so much fun with avis. Like you kind of hinted at, it's a little addicting.
Once you start, it's hard to go back to NOT layer so much.
I think it's nice that you're focusing on a character type of avi, rather than purely matching.
I've started doing the same with my theme... It's nice having more flexibility, isn't it?
