Glad the 2 x 4 idea sounds good to you. It did to me, too, just haven't used it. I think I read that in a book by Elliot Coleman? Not sure of the name, but I think that's right. He and his wife, Babara Damrosch, did a series of gardening shows years ago, and their books are out there---just full of good ideas! I haven't grown those beans, I forget all about them until it's too late, so thank you for reminding me. I always thought they'd be good in curry. I usually plant bush beans, just to avoid some of the problems with the wind here, but those would be good to cover a garden house I built a few years ago---hey! You may like this----and since you like to build, you will know what I'm talking about!

I just built four panels, 8 x 8, out of 2 x 4's---reinforced the corners with metal angles (like plant hangers or closet-pole supports). No other structure, just the wood "picture frames" with the metal corners. USE SCREWS!! Most people would would attach wood trellis at this point, assemble the box, and plant, but I didn't want to use the trellis panels because of the wind. So then I laid them all out flat on the ground and tapped in roofing nails all along the top surfaces, 2" apart. I had a big spool of plastic baling twine, so I just wove it, east-to-west, then north-to-south, until each panel was covered, tapped over the nails, and assembled my "garden house" ----three sides and a roof. It is very good in the wind, has been blown over a few times even with tie-downs, but it stays together, and the first year I grew birdhouse gourds on it. It supported hundreds of pounds of gourds, and gave us great shade. The only downside for me is that the baling twine is red and white, so in the winter, I look at a big "pink" box out in the yard!

I know what you mean about the clay! I have clay with silt on top. Fertile, but poor structure and poor drainage. Lots of work, but well worth it, to garden in this soil.

I really like the perennial herbs, find that I use lots of them when I cook---thymes, chives and garlic chives, oregano, rosemary, lavender, etc. I grow lots of basils, too, and lemon balm. Ginger is heavenly until the ants find it, and eat the tubers from the inside. Just brushing the leaves makes everything smell wonderful!

I guess it's no surprise that my favorite song is "The Great Adventure" by Steven Curtis Chapman! and Mercy Me's "I Can Only Imagine". And Bing Crosby singing "Don't Fence Me In"!!!!!

My raised beds here are used railroad ties---I'm in southwest Missouri, where you've probably seen on tv tornadoes, floods, ice storms, and wildfires the past few years! So railroad ties are a really good thing here! lol I love Paul James! He started on a local tv station in Tulsa, near where I grew up. No matter what you use, if it's wood, it will eventually rot, and the best idea I ever heard for dealing with that is to use a thinner strip of wood (like a 2 x 4) on the bottoms of your planks(that would make a 2 x 10 into a 2 x 14, roughly, if you just fastened them together edge-to-edge). Then when the rot sets in, instead of replacing the whole thing, you would only replace the bottom. I haven't tried it myself. But it would make it possible to use less expensive wood. Maybe cedar isn't too expensive where you are, or even used bricks or concrete blocks with spaces for the water to escape---just have to see what is best for what you want to do.

I love scripture set to music! If I'm going to have something "stuck in my head", that's definitely what I want it to be!

It must be beautiful where you are! It seems that the whole Southeast is HGTV's "Promised Land"!

Blueberries are a big pick-your-own crop here, and they do really well in most places, even in some shade, as long as you give them a fertilizer for acid-loving plants and don't plant them in a spot that's too wet. The only way for me to get a decent crop of strawberries is to plant them in raised beds, as it is pretty wet on this piece of ground. Don't know where you are, but either one grows well in pots. Hope you get them before the birds do!!!!
