Souma Akito is the greatly revered Head of the Souma clan, as well as the one born possessed of the god-spirit of the Zodiac curse. Although she was born female to her parents (Souma Akira and Souma Ren), her mother insisted upon her being raised as a boy, saying that a girl inheriting the title "Head of the family" would only create complications. (In truth, however, Ren despised her daughter, and was jealous that another female would take her place as most beloved in Akira's --- her husband's --- heart.) It's for this reason that Akito dresses and acts like a man; no one but the eldest four of the Juunishi --- Hatori, Shigure, Ayame, and Kureno --- knows her true gender.
Akito is often emotionally and sometimes physically abusive of those around her, specifically the Juunishi. Underneath all of her horrible actions and biting words, however, is a terribly lonely, hurt girl, desperate for a love that will remain "unchanging" . . . so desperate that she tries to keep by her side those whom her father once promised would love her forever --- the Juunishi --- by breaking them down, and making them wholly dependent upon her and her alone. . . .
