actually, then you subtract 4 from 12, and get 8/16, or 1/2
multiply that by 3, and you get 3/6, and 1/3 of 3 is 1, so what's left is 2/6
So, the answer is 1/3

ehm... that isn't exactly how I came to that conclusion but...
Here I think this might be slightly simpler.
In order to find a third of 2/3, we need to multiply both sides by 3, so that would be 6/9 (lol)
an a third of 6 is 2, so I ate 2/9
Now you subtract what you ate from what was there, so 6-2 is 4, so what's left is 4/9
I hope that made more sense sweatdrop

I don't think you understand how fractions of fractions work confused
You have to look at the 2/3 as if it isn't a fraction, but a whole number, even though it isn't. The question is asking how much you took if you took 1/3 of what was left, and 1/3 of 2/3 is 2/9

Yeah, and you want to take away a quarter of that, so just ignore the /16 for a bit and look at the 12. A quarter of 12 divided by 4 is 3, so now subtract 3 from 12, and put it back with the /16
and there you have 9/16

No, you're subtracting a fourth of what's left, and what's left is 3/4, but you can't divide 3 by 4, so you first have to multiply 3 by 4, but you also need to multiply 4 by 4, because that's how fractions work.

a fourth of 12 is 3 so subtract 3 from 12, and you get 9
