I love the end. winston and his lover couldn't look at eachother anymore. he got him to give up the one thing he though he could give up. he gave up his love. that
's like symbolically giving up your spirit, your reason for living. your drive, your pride... your humanity. sure it took a few more years for the thought police's efforts to come to fruition, but they broke him long before then.


Even if there WAS a resistance group, and they approached him after that, he wouldn't have gone with them.

It reminds me of this book i read about a boy soldier in africa (nonfiction). when the war was uh... like lying low for a moment... him and the kids on the opposing side were put to rehabilitation. both sides would say that the other side raped and killed their families, ect. but at this point they were so far gone that they did not realize they had both been used. they didn't know how to live anymore... all they wanted to do was go on killing those that were labelled the enemy.

this reminds me of Winston mind at the end- when he sees his former lover, and not a spark is there. no tenderness. the ideas that were put in his mind were what he clung to then

yes, but the though police KILLEd winston when he was brainwashed completely. does this not make you wonder why o'brien has yet to be killed? like he said "I was once like you". i suspect o'brien has yet to given in- he has simply given up

still. i love that book. i read it four years ago and ever since i have occupied my spare time thinking of how O'brien managed not to have the same fate as whatshisname.


i wonder what would happen if i did a close reading of it <3333 i wonder if that means o'brien doesn't really believe in it either. you need someone outside the system to make the system work.

that is not ONLY a book. it is a DAMN FINE book.
