Uh, probably a spawner, if it's mossy cobblestone. Look for a flaming cage block, and surround it with torches. That will supress it.

Also, zombies have wicked-stupid pathfinding, so, if they spawn in the same cave, they WILL find you.

I gathered fifty-five iron ore in a cave...

...then accidentally fell through a hole to my death. I cannot reach the area I fell into, not that it matters, given that everything hit lava and was DESTROYED gonk

I have two unlimited springs next to one another, so I pretty much do it a ton.

I just build an assload of walls if I want to keep the baddies out. Seems to work well enough.
