You can sorta have pets. I mean, they don't do anything, but, you can add them to your avatar. Example: see the duck hat in Gambino Hat Rack (try it on), or sometimes Monthly Collectibles will have "pet" like items, like last month's, with the dragon thingy in the back.
Recipes? Do you mean, like, when I was trying to get a tattoo? those require "ink recipes". One way to find out is to go to http://www.tektek.org. Go to "GaiaOnline Items", then type in a tatoo you want. for example: angel wing tattoo. This will tell you if the tattoo you want exists (you can specify it's color, too), and what kinds of inks are required for it. TekTek is a good site, cuz it can tell you everything you want about Gaia. Try going to http://www.tektek.org/dream, where you can create your "dream Avi". It's really fun!! ^_^ You can post your dream avi code in yuor Signature, and theneveryime you post in the forums, it will show up under your post, where your signature is ^_^ (Access signature info under My Account, which is on the My Gaia tab.) hope that all helps!! ^_^
