About Merry
According to Samwise Gamgee; "Master Meriadoc Brandybuck, better known to his friends and family as "Merry", was easily one of the most remarkable Hobbits in the whole history o' the War of the Ring.
He was the smartest Hobbit; always a bit of a planner and thinker, it was he who first found out about old Mr.Bilbo's funny "magic" Ring, and it was him who got me to spy on Mr.Bilbo and Mr. Frodo, and he who organized Mr.Frodo's escape from the Shire. Also, he made most of the contacts along the way until we got lost for a bit in the Old Forest. That was a scary moment, that was. All the same, it was always Mr.Merry who was the natural leader of our little party before Strider came along to help us. It was Mr.Merry who befriended old King Theoden of Rohan, and Mr. Merry who wounded the Lord of the Nazgul so that Lady Eowyn could get in to kill him. It was once again Mr.Merry who led the charge in the Shire when the Shire was overtook by old Saruman, who wanted to kill all humans and steal all the pipeweed. With the assistance of Mr. Pippin, Mr.Merry hisself routed Saruman and his gang of hoodlum humans and half-orcs, and sent 'em all packin'. He was the bravest , smartest Hobbit in all the Shire, I do believe.
Mr. Merry settled down to marry Estrella Bolger, the sister of his other good friend, Mr.Fredegar (or Fatty). He became the Master of Buckland, which is kind o' like a highland clan chief, and he lived a long, happy life. In his old age, he and Mr.Pippin set out once more on a final great journey. Mr. Merry was able to say goodbye to the aged King Eomer of Rohan before accompanying Mr.Pippin to Gondor, where they lived out the rest of their days in honor and comfort.
Now, the Brandybucks of Buckand have an ancestry every bit as old as that of the Tooks, but there's all the same lots o' difference between them and the Hobbits of the Shire proper. Most of 'em live in a huge, deep ancestral smial known as Brandy Hall, in the "highlands" of the eastern side of the Brandywine River. The Master of Buckland is a hereditary leader not unlike a clan chieftan, and he is a powerful figure.
The Brandybucks are very rich, just like the Tooks -- but their wealth comes from their unhobbit-like dealing in boats and barges and the transportation of goods along the river, often doing business with other races besides Hobbits. This alone makes them appear odd to others in the Shire. They also privately train themselves to be warriors which is a very old Brandybuck tradition, and they have a special battle horn that only gets blown when there's an emergency. I never heard it blow but once, when Saurman's ruffians invaded the Shire, but I'm told it was blowed once before, when the Black riders chased Mr.Fredegar acrosst Crookhollow. Brandybucks also talk with a funny accent, and they wear kilts on very special occasions.
Lots o' folk think of the Brandybucks as odd and not entirely to be trusted, but when the chips are down and danger draws near, who do the people of the Shire always look to? Why naturally, to none other than the Brandybucks. It is they who drive off the wolves with their arrows and spears, they who blow the Buckland horns to summon the clan and to warn folk in the region of danger. Odd they may appear and different their ways may be--but there are none else quite like them, and they are -- as always -- the heroes of the Shire. And while Mr. Merry was Lord Meriadoc the Chief o' the Brandybucks and Master o' Buckland, you can believe it when I says that the Shire was safer than ever."
