oh, I do have a word of advice, Benedict has a deep voice for his appearance...Almost identical to Alan Rickman (SNAPE!!) I would actually pay Benedict to read my bedtime stories for his voice is hypnotic to me but he can make it sound menacing and I can easily hear him as the voice of Smaug. I'm actually looking forward to the interaction between the two of them on the big screen. Also, it did just dawn on me that you are right and that he is "technically" leading him to his death XD. That's also a very good question as to why Peter Jackson decided to have both main cast members of Sherlock in the Hobbit films but I'm not complaining. I have to add that You might want to watch Sherlock if you have the free time. It's an hour and a half long and if you enjoyed the Downey Jr. Versions of it then I think you'd like the BBC Version. Just because it takes Sherlock and modernize it (though he still works in London) so he has all this new technology to help him solve crimes. I know I'm gushing but the whole cast is just great...Even found out that the woman who plays Ms. Hudson (the owner of the apartment they rent) and Benedict go back a ways so its cute to see them interact. It's actually one of the very few T.V. Shows I watch and wont mind watching again, and again.

To answer your question, Yes, Benedict Cumberbatch does play as Sherlock in the BBC Version (and Martin Freemen aka Bilbo plays as John Watson). As that rumor about Sherlock being killed, well lets just say that according to the books Sherlock Holmes does meet his death through Moriarty and SPOILERS!! he has already "died" in the last episode of the second season. I dont know if you've seen it but Sherlock: Game of Shadows with Robert Downey Jr. is pretty close to the books adaption...The BBC Version, well, lets just say I wasn't prepared for it and I cried and cursed the day I watched Sherlock. The third season actually should begin filming sometime this month as they are in the process of setting up the set and though I dont think Watson would kill Sherlock but I can imagine him being punched in the face... If you haven't watched it, you should. The first episode is called A Study in Pink and the chemistry between the actors is just wonderful. It's entertaining, thought provoking and you have to look out for every single subtle clue cause the writers don't mention something without it leading to anything. Also, pay attention to the backgrounds and to the tiniest details. Sherlockians (thats what they are called on Tumblr) are still finding out things.
