Every Smile's a lie. A dirty lie, a way for me to mask the pain I feel. Sorrow is what it's called, and it constantly claws at me with relentless fervor. The laughing is just an escape, one of the few ways to keep as sane as possible in this dreary existence. No one greets me if they don't have to. I'm positive most people hate me, and best of all I hate myself. I can't remember the last time I looked in the mirror and wasn't disgusted by what I saw. Pitiful, whining, and stupid, what amazing qualities, people should kill to be near me. Right, I should just disappear; sail off into the sunset, never to be seen again. That would do the world a service. No one would miss me, no one would care, and no one would bother to pull out their hair over such a sad soul. Well, this is my truth, my secret, my lie, that even when I smile I feel empty inside. I feel like a firefly who's lost its light, useless and hopeless and a thorn in the side of all the other Lightning bugs who shine bright in the night sky. Who needs a firefly without light? But even this firefly tries to hold on, to shine brighter than all its fellow insects, to prove its worth to the others. But I cannot do that. I have not the tools nor the time nor the willpower. I am broken, defeated and done. It's time to cut my losses and go, but I can't, it's as if I'm chained to the floor. A prisoner of irony, I want to leave, but I can't, I hate to be alone more. The lesser of two evils must be chosen right? Right? Wrong. I wish to show what I'm worth. This Firefly wishes to have the brightest light of all, even if it never happens. To fail only means I am truthful to my premonition that I can only lose. Dharma and karma both dislike me loads, it seems fate is against me and so I continue my quest. Failure after failure, more and more grief, burned and broken, lays the Firefly. If I pass, be it gods will or fate's handy work, and fate does have it out for me. So I smile for you now to make you feel better, or do I? I'm not even a real firefly... just an echo, the reverberation of some stupid firefly that died in the name of surpassing his peers. But that's a good analogy, an echo, something that can make people smile, but also happens to be unwelcome most of the time. Echo's can be dangerous, causing avalanches and the like. So on the whole, said reverberation is unwanted, just like me. I am a firefly, wounded and stupid, but more to the point I am an echo, a useless echo... an echo... an Echo of the Fireflies...
