Have the little girl standing in the shadows, and after a while when the old man is closing in- the shadows begin to spasm and seem like they're twirling around her... and the old man's face is manipulated by the shadows and looks like he has a dramatic sinister grin... and soon her eyes are all that remain before fully engulfed in the shadows.
