Oh I agree with you there. I think it's because, like you said, the plot really does pick up.
I think the first seems a little slow after reading the second because the first one sort of laid down the foundation so to speak.
Clive Barker has a website with some of his own quotes that explains a little about the third book if your interested ^-^
And it features a lot of his artwork too.
