Ums...not yet o wo. I has 1-8 but it's really only 1-6 since I don't count period 7 lunch and orchestra. Tai has 2-8 with period 8 lunch DX. And she has gym before lunch, and outdoor track. That bites.

Fencing team for girls is during the second term. You should join. Colleges like that.

I think the main advantage from defending is just time.

It's not like nobody can see the army of 10,000 plus soldiers marching surprised

Many defenders, like you said, the Spartans, are able to erk out a victory just through careful planning and preparedness.

And that formation you spoke of is called a Phalanx :p.



But the ultimate advantage in combat? Technology and innovation. If you've ever read Robert Greene's 33 Strategies of War, he cites Napoleon as an example. He conquered almost all of Europe, and was only defeated when his massive army became so huge, that it became impossible to manuver. Thus, it choked itself to death.

At any rate, his main strength was speed. Napoleon's troops marched in double time. They could switch formations faster, advance faster and retreat faster. The enemy was so shocked by the sheer speed and fluidity of his army that they would completely lose morale. Genghis Khan had stirrups which allowed his soldiers to stand while on horseback, giving his archers INCREDIBLE range and the ability to fire while moving.

Of course these advantages never last, for as soon as one of your own men gets captured, you're enemy will know all the secrets you know.

But the fact remains quick decisive action and innovation wins the day in combat.

I disagree with your signature quote. The defender has home advantage. They know the terrain, they have time to set traps (assuming it isn't OMGWTF ambush from some complete stranger), and they probably have some sort of defensive structure to work with.

The attackers are at a disadvantage. Unless they have extensive intel, they're likely in unknown territory. They have to deal with traps, and ambushes of their own. They also have limited time to work, as they dont have a town or structure to draw supplies from. A well stocked fort can resist a siege for years. Attackers eventually need food :p

It takes alot more strategy to pull off victory under those conditions IMO.
