Haruhi is the main character of the story, a lower-middle class first-year high school student who is able to attend Ouran High School through a scholarship provided by the school. Her outward appearance is similar to a boy's due to her short hair and cute face; she had longer hair before but had to cut some of it due to a neighborhood child putting gum in her hair. Shortly after arriving at Ouran, Haruhi accidentally broke a vase worth ¥8,000,000 ($80,000 in the manga's North American English version) while in the third music room while she was looking for a quiet place to study, and since then has been forced to work for the Host Club to pay for it. Mistaking her for a male, the club initially had her working as their servant, but they made her a host once they discovered that, beneath her glasses and rumpled clothing, she had a cute face. Her natural charm and relaxed demeanour instantly made her a favorite with some of the club's customers.
