Rarely should you attend college just for "writing". As has been previously stated, an English major at the very least is preferable over graduating with "a degree in creative writing". If you intend to live off your writing, you're going need an education that can actually get you a job in the likely event that you don't hit it big. Not to mention, your writing itself is inadvertedly going to be improved by continuing education in any field. Writing is always there as a secondary, but you should not depend on it as a stable source of income this early in the game.

Honestly, even a major in English may not be the best path. A major in another subject could serve you just as well. Hundreds go through college with a major in English with the intent of working as a teacher or such while working on the Great American Novel before becoming a successful writer. This, in my view, is not the best course. If every writer out there is coming from similar educational backgrounds, their manuscripts are not going to stand out in a crowd. Give me a forensic anthropologist (-cough-) or a theologian (-coughagain-) who can write and suddenly their transcript gains a lot more credibility. Their subject matter is different and their diction is not set so deeply in all the tricks of the trade learned in "American Classic"/European Lit/etc. etc. courses that want-to-be-authors- English majors labor endlessly to include (and often over-include) in their American "classic".

If you have your heart on picking and choosing certain English classes to improve your writing in that way, then go put your current writing talents to use. Go get some scholarships. Even if they're in other fields, you can put them to use.

I agree with this 100%, and I'd like to add:

Even if your future husband makes enough money to support you, you should NEVER be financially reliant on another person when you have the ability to make enough money to support yourself. For that reason alone-- to retain your autonomy and your ability to walk out the door if something goes horribly wrong-- you should attend college. College also will help you find connections in the real world. It's great for networking and great for your basic --social, even-- education as well.

are any of you Gaiains published authors? this may sound like bragging, but i am. i'd really like to know if any of you are. and if so answer this question too, is it wrong to tell others of your sucsess? my sister is pissed at me because she says i'm bragging.

Yet you cannot spell and your control of grammar leaves a lot to be desired. Why on earth would we claim to be in the same "class of excellence" or whatever the hell it is you claim to be a part of?
He's right. eek

What is the world coming to? You need a lesson in spelling. Hes so very right

Well, I'll be at Otakon this weekend, so that's out.

Monday I have an officer's meeting. We could always do it that night after the meeting. We'll see, but it'll definetly have to be next week.

Just got a new boardgame that you may be interested in.

"Vampire Hunter."

I haven't played it yet, but it looks harmful enough. So you'll need to come over sometime so we can try and decipher it.
