let me try and explain it. (I'm no good with instructions.)
If someone requested to be your friend, click on "friends" which is on the drop down menu under the tab that says "my gaia"

there should be four tabs above the list that says your friends' usernames. (friends, ignored, waiting on you, waiting on them)

click on waiting on you.

there should be a box beside any requests. click inside the box. a checkmark should appear.
scroll down and clock on (I don't remember exactly, but it's something like "approve" or "add to friends" wink

To request to be friends, there should be a search for user box above the friend list.
type in their username and click search.
their name should pop up on the list. click in the check box then click on "add friend"

hopefully that helps..
and that turned out to be one long comment! whee
