About
Piano Man drifted from the old, faded juke box as men and women sat in their melancholy at the bar, nursing various poisons and whispering of better days, when life wasn’t so difficult to play. Outside, the stars played a silent tune to the moon, parading over the stolen cars, hookers and drug dealers, ignoring the ugliness of the world as they danced in the heavens. Someone lit a cigarette on the street corner, the little red tip illuminating his face a moment before purple smoke clouded over everything and coughing echoed through the alleyways lined with filth and homeless.
Two cats sang in spitting hisses to one another, the tabby of the two turning tail to be hit by a taxi, which paid no notice as it was steered past Fourth and Main, where a coughing man died. On the horizon, where the daughter or the evening met that of the morn, an apartment building was lit and sirens wept and no one seemed to notice. Luna wept for the passing of the Sun.
A child with wide, fearful eyes stole a dead man’s pocket watch and fled into the darkness to go watch the fire trucks pass her by. A drunk man stumbled from a warn tavern as a rough voice inside called the repeat of their favorite tune. A cloud passed over the mourning moon and threw the yellowing light of street lamps into sharper relief, accenting the glitter on the bosom of a woman as she got a man to take her home, while hers burned to the ground on the other side of town.
