About
Personality
First impressions of Dodge are seldom favourable; he can be surly, rude and monosyllabic. However, he is also highly intelligent and when he does speak at length on subjects he cares about he is eloquent and charming. He is not a misanthropist- on the contrary, people fascinate him and he loves a crowded room- but he prefers his own company; he would rather observe than participate.
Dodge is an artist, and he sees the world as a complex and beautiful place which he tries to capture as such in his many sketchbooks. He rejects the less tangible qualities of life as he is immersed in enough violence at home to understand aggression and weakness.
Dodge is fast growing into a man of moderation, which puts him at odds with the rest of his family who are only capable of excess. He is ashamed of his family's ill-gotten wealth and tries not to prosper from it; he tries to drop his expensive voice in conversation but inevitably it seeps through his efforts and colours his speech. He is a disciplined and moral boy, perhaps surprisingly so given his assumed mask of aimless adolescent aggression, and he lives his life according to the tenets of his faith.
Dodge lives with hurts which are not apparent but run deep, and despite the love he has for his family he feels deprived of affection. He lives in inescapable loneliness and he feels isolated even in the busiest of places...this is something he has only recently become aware of after the murder of a girl he loved, but he has suspected this desolation to be (latently) present since the death of his mother. This consuming grief is not something he will discuss. It is not something that even those closest to him are aware of, with perhaps the exception of Aire, his brother-in-law, in whom he confides more than any other.
Dodge knows his fate and he is not afraid of it, but neither does he look forward to it. He considers it inevitable and he prepares himself for it with the same patient devotion and determination that he undertakes anything.

Here Dead We Lie
Here dead we lie
Because we did not choose
To live and shame the land
From which we sprung.
Life, to be sure,
Is nothing much to lose,
But young men think it is,
And we were young.
