It would have been appropriate had the drink not have been tainted.
It is acceptable to share drinks on occasion, and this one was
formal.

In fact he did, Commander.
He offered me a glass of brandy after challenging me to try it, and I accepted.
It seems he added some unnoticeable ingredients to the drink.
