Well as long as you don't part the one side to the other, you should be fine because then it will get you that effect.

Yeah it is very annoying, and it takes too long. I just quit doing it, and settled for my long brown wavy hair the way it is.

People do it at our school too, but I don't think it looks silly, just I don't know how they do it everyday. It's too long!
