The answer to your question is quite simple really.
People lie for 1 or more of the following 3 reasons...

Protection (People lie to protect themselves fro either physical, mental or emotional harm.)
Profit (People lie to gain something or prevent the loss of something.)
Pain (People lie to discredit and or cause other people pain/harm.)
