In 1918 the spanish influenza hit, his dad was taken first, as a dying wish Elizabeth asked Carlisle Cullen (a good vampire) to do everything in HIS power to save Edward. Carlisle had been looking for a companion for a long time, but never wanted to take someone's life from them like his was. Edward was dying when Carlisle bit him and transformed him into a vampire. Edward Anthony Mason then became Edward Cullen, forever stuck at age 17.
Edward has the ability to read minds, they don't know exactly why he has this ability but they do have theory. Every vampire has super strength, speed, hearing, and reflexes. However one vampire can be faster or stronger than another.
Carlisle didn't want to feed on humans ever to satiate his thirst, instead he found a way to be a "vegetarian" (the Cullen's inside joke). This involved drinking the blood of animals instead. This makes their eyes a bright butterscotch to gold color instead of the regular bright crimson. In between hunts vampire's eyes will slowly turn to a black, this means that they are very thirsty, also deep purple shadows will occur under their eyes, as if sleep deprived. Another thing is that vampires never sleep, they are hard as granite, smooth like marble, and ice cold.
