So my new hobby is listening to talk radio while I'm in the car. It helps me stay awake (since I have to focus on what they're saying rather than zone out listening to music), and I get my fill of the news for the day.
Lately, this local whackjob has been filling in for a regular broadcaster around the 5 - 8 o'clock shift, which is when I frequently am in my car.
Now, I've learned to take what most talk radio hosts say with a grain of salt, because they like to rile up their listeners and make them call in. However, this lady is INFURIATINGLY IGNORANT and has, on more than one occasion, tempted mild-mannered Merri to call in and scream at her.
Let's start by discussing one of her recent shows about intelligent design v. evolution:
Psycho Radio Host: Blah-dee-blah, if there was a big bang that created life, how come we can't create life out of explosions now?
Merri: ....? Did she honestly just ask that?
PRH: I mean seriously, why don't we have little buggies and crawdads and deer coming out of nuclear explosions?
Merri: Hoho, she must be kidding! Who can be this STUPID and have a radio program?
PRH: Why, I remember once, my friend lit a firecracker in a catfish's mouth when he was little -- BOOM, catfish everywhere! Why no new life springing from that explosion?
Merri: I-.. wha-.. did she really-.... HUH?!?!?!?
Finally, a man called in and politely explained that EVOLUTION took place over TIME. She seriously mocked the poor guy after he hung up, saying, "Yada yada yada, "time time time", that's the same thing I hear from everyone." The man also had explained that evolution was non-linear, meaning that human beings split from apes at one point in history, evolving a lot while their former ape "brethren" (for lack of a better word) remained the same. She was like, "Linear? I don't know what he's talking about! Anyway, next caller."
As mind-numbingly stupid as she sounded that night, nothing can compare with what I heard tonight. As usual, I heard the tinfoil-hat, crazed hate rhetoric spewing from her vile mouth -- this time about Muslims and why people ought to fear them. "Peace-loving religion?" she scoffed tonight. "Let me read some quotes from the Qu'ran tonight that'll change your minds, listeners." She proceeded to rattle off some quote from the Qu'ran about infidels being killed by true Muslims. I wanted to say, what about the Bible? Aren't Christians supposed to be peace-lovers? I'm pretty sure the Bible holds some pretty hardcore things like, "yea verily, and God doth smote the non-believers in a firey hail of brimestone and death" and so on and so forth. Let me mention right now that I'm a practicing Catholic (something that's likely to get me shunned by some people on Gaia.. apparently religion isn't 'cool' or whatev), and I understand that the Bible isn't meant to be taken word-for-word, it's a book of stories and teachings that are supposed to guide Christians in their day-to-day life. But anyway, with her logic, shouldn't I be a peace-hating terrorist? My holy book also talks about killing non-believers, just as the Qu'ran talks about killing infidels (aka, those who don't believe in Allah).
She continues on spitting out hatred and irrational fear, claiming that no other religion bombs people like the Muslims. No Catholics (uh, Ireland?), no Jews (uh, Israel?), etc, etc. She criticized the Muslims in America for not taking a more active stance against terrorism. Ah... forgive me if I'm assuming things here, but I think the American Muslims are reacting the same way as American Christians and American Jews and American aetheists reacted to terrorist attacks -- with utmost horror and condemnation.
I have never in my life been so appalled at someone's ignorance. As a Republican (OMG a Republican AND a Catholic? I'm hated all around Gaia! xd ) I have talked politics with people whose opinions anger me and rile me up, but NOTHING compares with the disgust that this woman evokes in me. I have never considered calling into a radio show and talking to a host, let alone yelling at them and their stupidity, but this woman has sorely tempted me to do so.
But wait... she promptly hangs up on anyone who sounds like they may be getting the upperhand in the conversation with the line, "Sorry, running out of time, thanks for your call!" and then mocking them afterwards.
Some people make me sick.
