The Eye, 2002 Directed by Pang Brothers Rated R
Fair warning: this is the original The Eye, in Cantonese and Thai with English subtitles.
This was an interesting movie. I really enjoy foreign films and have pretty good luck in my random choices of them. While this movie was low-budget, it managed a decent set of special effects and smart plot. As with any low-budget film, there were holes in the story and a few missing pieces of information that could have stretched the rating a bit higher.
heart Lead actress Lee Sin-Je. She had a lot of personality about her and nailed the scream moments.
heart The conclusion. The movie really ties together nicely from start to finish, plot-holes and all. Not ALL of the actors were convincing but they didn't take up too much screen time so it's able to be over-looked a bit.
heart Lots of interesting visual effects. Not just the spooks but also the camera work and vantage points of even contained scenes.
There were a few situations that could have really solidified the film had they been properly addressed and finished.
I really liked the culture differences when handling a horror setting. I'm looking forward to seeing the English remake of this film (starring Jessica Alba and Alessandro Navoli) so I can compare the two. This movie is worth the watching (and reading if you need the subtitles like me).
Turn out the lights and immerse yourself in the story.
"All is not as it appears in this chilling psychological thriller After 18 years of blindness, 20 year-old Mun's eyesight is restored following a corneal transplant. Immediately, mysterious black-clad figures in Mun's field of vision seem to foreshadow sudden deaths, and disfigured denizens haunt her daily. Mun slowly learns that she has inherited her donor's particular fate- the ability to see into the future and the terror that comes with it.
An international box office smash stylishly realized by the Pang Brothers (the hot directional team from Asia), and the film has already spawned a sequel and caused Tom Cruise's production company to snap up the remake rights.
THE EYE is a new genre classic in the league of THE RING."
