The Myth of Leadership Development
Cultivating leaders is a major strategic action for most organizations that are big and a multi-million dollar industry for training firms, consultants and universities. But if we have the significance of leadership badly wrong, much of the investment could be wasted. There are at least 3 issues with contemporary leadership theory:

1. Leaders are depicted as occupying positions of authority over others which means until in charge of people are you, that you can not show leadership.

2. The idea that leadership is a learnable skill set fosters the feeling which you can't be a leader.

The point is the fact that leadership, as currently conceived, is an exclusive club for management level workers, something that those at the front line can just aspire to once they develop the relevant abilities and maturity. That is a colossal waste of talent.

Dispersed Leadership and Employee Involvement

A different vision of direction depicts it as something all employees can do. But when leadership is defined just as encouraging a much better means, then all workers who take a stand on any job-related dilemma, even in a very local, small scale mode, can reveal direction to their co-workers and upward to their bosses. So called informal leadership means something different - informally taking charge of an organization. Just encouraging new courses has nothing to do with being in charge, officially or otherwise, of a group of men and women.

Examples of Leadership Redefined

" When the Sony worker who affected top direction to embrace his proposition for PlayStation, they didn't report to him.

" A fresh customer care worker might set a good example of a much better way of serving customers without being in charge of anyone.

" Whenever you determine your manager to think otherwise you've had a leadership impact on that individual.

Not one of these examples entails handling the people on whom the leadership impact was felt. The leader sells the tickets and customers need to update our theory of direction to take care of driving the bus to the destination. Obviously, additional injections of direction might be needed enroute to resell the journey's merits, but the bulk of the task in getting there requires good management skills. Direction should be reconfigured as a nurturing, empowering and function that is facilitative, not just a mechanically controlling one.

Executive Development

What really gets developed in so-called leadership development systems are round executives. The simple truth is that direction, imagined as challenging the status quo and boosting new courses, is based on youthful rebelliousness, something which is not a learnable skill set. When front line employees with no subordinates stand up for their ideas, they may be revealing leadership to the broader organization. So called leadership development programs really turn employees who are already leaders into supervisors. Organizations need great supervisors.

Obviously, executives can also reveal leadership, whenever they too promote a much better method.
