There are four types of under water lights: xenon, halogen, high intensity discharge (HID) lights, and light emitting diode (LED) lights. LED lights are rapidly gaining in favor because of their many good properties. For one fact, they last up to 60,000 hours, which is longer than most people actually own their boat. LED lights shine at peak brightness throughout their lifetime, and they use the least amount of electricity of the four types, so they won't drain batteries. They run much cooler, too, and some brands feature automatic safety switches that turn the lights off if for some reason they do become overheated. They come in several colorings, and have a variety of various mounting choices.
LED underwater fishing lights are flexible and modular, so you can install a few or a lot. Some larger yachts have them attached all the way around the vessel every few feet, to make a great halo effect underwater. You can get them in white, blue, and green, and choice depends on personal taste and the type of water the boat is used in. For example, in clear waters, white lights are great, but for more opaque waters, blue works well. Green performs best in murky waters.
Pure blues and greens have been scientifically proven to be easy on fishes' eyes, so that if you are using blue or green underwater fishing lights, the fish are not as skittish when they're brought up into the boat. Sword fishermen document that with blue lights, swordfish calm down considerably whenever they're introduced into the boat, and the same phenomenon is documented with game fish such as tuna.
Fish strobe lights come pre-programmed with several strobing patterns that can be controlled by a switch mounted on the control panel. Patterns include slow or rapid strobing, intermittent flashes, or longer bursts of light. They can be mounted through the hull, flush-mounted, or surface mounted with no below-waterline hull penetration. Aluminum engine brackets are another mounting option.
With LED under water lights, electrical connections are snap-together plugs. These integrate into a transformer that is connected to a fused, switched power supply that's usually located on the dash panel. The transformers are available as 12 or 24 volt DC or 110 volt AC. Ocean LED brand underwater fishing lights are provided with a lens covered with a substances that disperses light and resists algae growth.
Underwater fishing lights add to the boating experience in numerous ways. Not only do they add tremendously to the ambiance at night, but they attract fish, whether for fishing purposes, or simply the enjoyment of getting to see the beautiful sea life at night. LED under water lights are becoming very popular because of their low energy consumption, and their exceptionally long life.
