This one is extremely important and having knowledge about all birth control types, especially accurate knowledge, can have a large impact on which one you choose. So I'll try to be as accurate as possible on the information I provide. It also helps to know whether or not it will offer any protection against sexually transmitted diseases/infections (STDs)
Abstinence This is the only method proved to be 100% effective in stopping the spread of STDs, as well as birth control. This includes all sex types; be it hands, oral, a**l, or vaginal intercourse.
Condoms The most effective birth control and STD prevention method next to abstinence. It is currently estimated at 96% success and they say it should be higher but due to improper use the condoms fail sometimes. They include instructions and I suggest memorizing and possibly practicing them even if you aren't the one wearing the condom as being aware of proper use can help a lot in the long run. They function by creating a protective barrier between the p***s and anything it makes contact with. They are single use only. Also never wear more then 1, wearing more then 1 actually reduces their effectiveness as the condoms now create more friction against the extra condom which can result in tearing.
Spermicides These are inserted inside the v****a as a method used to prevent pregnancy. They do not stop STD's at all. They also have very specific instructions for their use, and those instructions vary by brand. They have a 90% birth control prevention rate, which like condoms, may be higher if the product is used correctly. They work by killing sperm before sperm can reach the uterus. Typically single use but they have varying times that they function for.
"The Pill" There are multiple brands of birth control pills, some you take daily, some you take less then that. Most of them work by controlling hormones. They can also double as a period regulator for women who have problems in their cycles. They do not prevent STDs at all. The use level varies by brand.
Diaphragms This is something akin to condoms for women, but more difficult to insert. It's a cup like object which covers the cervix in order to prevent pregnancy by creating a barrier between the uterus and sperm. Re-usable but must be cleaned before each use.
IUD (Intrauterine Device) This is something like a rod which is inserted into the cervix directly. It blocks the opening to the cervix and commonly has an agent to kill sperm. It's meant for longterm use with little fuss as once it's inserted it simply works. They are most commonly used for women who have all ready had a child as they can create complications for women who have not.
The shot This works like the pill does in that it regulates hormones, but it does it over a longer period of time and you don't have to remember to take it, worry about it falling out or off, all ready having a child, but you should be aware of it's side effects and when your last one was administered.
The patch This works just like the shot does but you have to have a patch on your body which may come off later. It's easier to remove then the shot should you change your mind though.
Oral Sex It isn't possible to get pregnant from this unless someone is ejaculating in really strange ways but it is still possible to spreads STDs, especially STDs like Herpes.
The "pull out" method This is the least effective method of birth control, it consists of pulling out before ejaculation in the hopes of preventing pregnancy. However due to precum as well as possibly bad timing around 50% of people who used this method reported getting pregnant
a**l Sex Though more likely to prevent pregnancy then the pull out method, splash pregnancies can still occur. A splash pregnancy is where sperm reaches the v****a from an external source. It is also one of the easiest ways to spread STDs as blood flows much easier in the rectum then the v****a. It can also be very painful if done wrong.
Most of these birth control methods are designed for women. They are currently in development of a pill for men but it has not gotten past testing. Alot of them can also be combined but make sure the label states whether or not they are compatible as some condoms are not compatible with some spermicides and so on.
I personally use Trojan-Enz brand condoms with spermicidal lubricant. I also use a spermicide for a**l sex as it can provide piece of mind for her.
As always questions, comments, and feedback are always welcome.
