She met Kaoru one night at one of the clubs that Makota Shigeru frequented. She had noticed him several times before. In fact, how could one not notice Kaoru Takeshi? Tall, lean, and moved with almost a catlike grace, he was definitely a good-looking man. She had taken to watching him surreptitiously on the occasions he accompanied Shigeru.
She was sitting at the bar one night when he appeared at her side. He leaned an elbow on the bar and rested his chin on his hand.
“Now what, pray tell, is a beautiful woman like you doing all alone?” He gave her a charming smile.
She arched an eyebrow at him and sipped her drink. About damn time, she thought to herself. Showtime, Kat. Let’s do this. She tilted her head slightly and gave him a sultry smile.
“And I suppose you’re here to save me from my apparent loneliness?” She sat back slightly and crossed her legs.
He gave her a cocky grin, “What kind of man would I be if I didn’t? The man is supposed to be the hero, right? Let’s dance.” He took her hand and led her out to the dance floor just as a slow song started. She let him lead her out onto the floor and loosely draped her arms around his neck. He rested his hands on her hips as they swayed to the music.
He leaned over and whispered in her ear, making goosebumps prickle her arms when he did.
“I’ve been watching you for awhile, and I know you’ve been watching me. So tell me, why do you seem to pop up wherever I am?”
She leaned back slightly so she could look him in the eye. “Let’s just say I need an audience with your employer.”
He looked at her, as if measuring her up in some way. “And just why do you want to speak to Shigeru-san, if you don’t mind my asking?”
She stopped dancing and leaned in to whisper in his ear. “Just tell him I used to work for Colum Fraser.” She nipped his ear slightly and walked off the dance floor and made her way back to her seat at the bar. She ordered another drink and watched him as he left the dance floor and made his way back to Shigeru-san. She continued to sip her drink as she watched Shigeru wave away his entourage so that he could talk to Kaoru privately.
A few moments later, Kaoru was back at her side. “Well, sweetheart, tonight’s your lucky night. Shall we? I’m Kaoru, by the way, Kaoru Takeshi.” He held his arm out for her and she stood, slipping her arm through his. “Nice to meet you, Kaoru, I’m Katana.” He led her over to where Shigeru was seated in the VIP section of the club. He motioned for her to sit next to him and Kaoru took a seat opposite of them. Shigeru looked her over, “So, Takeshi-san tells me you used to work for Fraser-san? He was a good man; I was saddened by his death a few years ago. Now, how may I be of assistance to you?”
A flicker of sadness flashed across her face before she composed herself again. She smiled at Shigeru. “Yes, Colum was a good man. In many ways he was like a father to me, and I too, was greatly saddened by his death. But, I have taken great care to avenge his death and now find myself missing the work I used to do for Colum.” She gave him a pointed look, “And I am well aware that you know what kind of work I used to do for Colum, so I come to you offering my services as well. All I ask for in return is to be paid in cash, and have your protection.”
Shigeru sat and let her words sink in. She was nervous as hell, she had just gone up to one of the most powerful men in the world and asked for a job and all she had for credentials was Colum’s name. Shigeru motioned for Kaoru and the two men spoke briefly. She busied herself by helping herself to some wine that Shigeru had at his table. She sat back and sipped the wine and Kaoru went back to his seat, eyeing her. Shigeru turned and spoke to her.
“You are a most unique person, Miss…”
“Katana, I just go by Katana, Shigeru-san.”
“Miss Katana, I find you intriguing, so I think we can come to some sort of agreement. You will be working with Takeshi-san until I am sure you can be trusted to work alone for any of my endeavors. I take it this will be acceptable to you?”
She felt a rush of relief, and met his gaze. “Yes, that will be acceptable. I won’t let you down, Shigeru-san.”
Kaoru stood and offered his arm to her again. “I shall see you home, Katana. We’ll start training early tomorrow.”
She stood and bowed slightly to Shigeru before allowing Kaoru to escort her home. During the drive to her apartment, they kept their conversation to small talk, knowing that they would be talking much more over the coming weeks.
