Chapter 7- School, Music and Surprises Skye ~~~~ The seventeenth of August, my first day of eighth grade. I, unlike my crazed sisters, was calm as I got my things together. “Don’t get into any fights,” My dad joked. “When have I ever gotten into any fights?” “You tell me.” I rolled my eyes and got ready to walk out the door. My outfit for the day: A grey All Time Low shirt, denim skinny jeans, blue Converse with orange laces, and my hair down with the bangs half in my face. “Skye, are you scared?” Sydney asked when I was just a few feet away from the door. I smiled and nodded. “A little bit. Have fun in kindergarten.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mine and Jonathan’s relationship is going great, its been about a month and a half since we started dating. I only told my best friends about our relationship: Lindsey Park and her boyfriend-Luke, Alexis Minjee, and Aiden Clark. They’re the only people I trust not to spread rumors. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I navigated my way through the eighth grade hallway, which is completely on the second floor of the middle school. The biggest prep and b***h in the school, Sarah Marshall, tripped me when I wasn’t looking. I fell to the ground, my books scattered across the floor in front of me. “Oops, sorry!” Sarah faked an apology with her evil little laugh. “I’m going to punch you in the jaw one of these days,” I muttered while getting my stuff back together. “Ooh, I’m so scared!” She remarked sarcastically. “Please Skye, I‘m not stupid.” “That’s debatable,” I muttered, walking away.
I found Lindsey, Luke, and Aiden in the social studies classroom. “Hi, guys,” I greeted them. Aiden went out with Jonathan three years ago, he was her first boyfriend, and she was his first girlfriend. They were only ten and eleven, their relationship didn’t last long at all. They’re just friends now. I sat down by them. “Where’s Lexi?” I asked. “Her mom’s bringing her here,” Lindsey answered. Alexis, her brother, sister and mom were in a serious car crash back in March. The crash paralyzed Alexis from the waist down, putting her in a wheelchair. She’s a new student at our school this year, but we’ve been friends since a month after the accident. She wheeled her wheelchair in the room that second. “Alexis, over here!” I called her over. She smiled and came over to us. “Who’s the live Barbie Doll in need of a reality check, outside?” She asked. We all knew she was talking about Sarah. “Sarah Marshall, meanest girl in the whole school,” Luke informed her. “Just stay out of her way and you’ll be fine.” “Check it out! We’ve got a crippled in class!” One jerk, Micah, remarked. “Make fun of her one more time, there’ll be two of you!” Luke threatened. Micah’s friends busted out laughing, Micah ignoring us after that. Alexis just laughed. “At least I won’t ever have to take gym again!” That’s the awesome thing about Alexis, she always sees a bright side of every situation. “So your boyfriend starts high school today?” Aiden asked me in an attempt to change the subject. I laughed a bit. “Yeah, I talked to him this morning.” “What did he say?” “Good morning, Sunshine.” “Aww!” She exclaimed. Sarah walked in the classroom with her “Friends”, and came up right behind the desk I was sitting in. “Move!” She ordered. I rolled my eyes and ignored her. “Skye Kaighn! Move!” She yelled at me. “First of all, I don’t go by my first and last name,” I reminded her. “Second of all, I was here first.” “Move, move, move!” She ordered mechanically. I sighed. “You’re wasting your breath, my little pain in the a**. I’m not moving.” She huffed and went to another classroom. My friends and I burst out laughing and exchanged high fives. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sixth hour Communication Arts, five minutes before the last bell is due to ring. My heartbeat was like someone playing a snare drum, my foot tapped along with the beat. “Drink a couple Monsters before class?” Lindsey asked with a laugh. I shook my head, my foot didn’t stop tapping. “Jonathan said he has a surprise for me after school and school’s almost over,” I explained. Lindsey laughed again. “Remember to invite me to the wedding!” I laughed as well. “You, Aiden and Lexi can be my bridesmaids.” “Okay class!” The teacher, Mrs. Coyle, yelled over the class. We stopped talking to hear what she was saying. “Did everyone have a good first day back?” She asked. Some people said yes, some said no. “Why are some of you saying no?” Mrs. Coyle asked with a frown. The bell(Its not even a bell, its just a long beep) rang and we all left before Mrs. Coyle could say anything else. “This should be a fun year,” I thought I heard her mutter sarcastically. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “Jonathan! Why do I have to close my eyes?” I asked my boyfriend. I was at his house now and he was leading me down the stairs to the basement, for my surprise. His hands covered my eyes, so all I could see was his palms. “Okay, Skye. I’d like you to meet some people!” Jonathan announced as he took his hands from my face, four guys that all looked around Jonathan’s age were standing in the basement’s living space, holding instruments. “Uh, hi,” I greeted them. “Allow me to introduce you to our band, Shameless Noah,” Jonathan said, leading me to the group of guys. “This is Taylor, he’s guitar and backing vocals,” He introduced me to a dirty-blonde haired, tall guy who held a guitar. The boy named Taylor extended his hand forward. “Nice to meet you. I shook it. “Nice to meet you, Taylor.” “And this is Kendall, backing vocals and bass guitar,” Jonathan pointed to another blonde-haired guy. Kendall greeted me with a head nod and a smile. “Asher, keys and beats,” Said Jonathan. The boy he was pointing to had spiked brown hair with blonde highlights. He waved and flashed a grin. “And on drums, Collin.” “Hey,” Collin, a brownish-reddish haired guy who’s really tall, greeted. I smiled at him. “Dude, this is the girl you’ve been spazing out over?” Kendall asked Jonathan with a laugh. Jonathan laughed and punched his friend in the arm. “Dude, do me a favor?” He asked Kendall. “What?” “Shut up!” Jonathan grabbed his guitar and warmed up with a few chords. “Want to hear a song?” He asked me. I nodded and sat down on the couch. Shameless Noah played a slower tempo that sounded beautiful. “I ask you a question, I demand an answer! Why aren’t you here?” Jonathan sang. “Your morning smile,” Belted Taylor. “And your evening laugh. Dissolved along with your strength to carry on. “Why?” Sang Jonathan. The tempo sped up and got louder. “Do you not follow on my heels anymore? Why do you give me this eerie feel?” Sang Taylor. “Little girl, your voice echoes in my hears. Shadow crossing through my fears,” Sang Jonathan and Kendall in unison. The song is called “Show Yourself”. The band played the last notes after about three minutes and put their instruments aside. “Okay, may the bashing begin,” Said Collin as he flopped on to the couch. “It was really good, honest,” I assured him. Asher snorted. “Ha! Whatever floats your boat.” “All we need is a gig,” Jonathan pointed out, wrapping his arms around me. I giggled as he pulled me to his chest. “I’m sure you’ll get one soon.” he fumbled through his pant pockets and pulled out a little, black box. “I got you something,” He said. I smiled and opened the box to find a beautiful necklace with two hearts intertwined as the symbol. “Oh my gosh, Jonathan! Its beautiful!” I exclaimed. He smiled and put the necklace on me. “Perfect,” He said, smiling. I remembered that I had something for him and fumbled through my book bag to find it. It was a silver-colored guy necklace. “Skye, this is awesome. Thanks!” Jonathan exclaimed, putting the necklace on and giving me a kiss. “Dude, not cool,” Taylor complained. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The sun was setting, like in movies and crap, and we lay in Jonathan’s backyard watching it. It was just him and I, the guys had left. “So how’d you guys get your band name?” I asked him. The sunlight shone directly on his soft, black hair. He swallowed before answering. “Noah is Taylor’s little sister’s name.” “Oh, why did you pick her name?” I asked. “Because she got really sick back in March and ended up in the hospital. She was only nine,” He paused and continued. “Noah was in the hospital for more than a month, then she was put on life support. Life support lasted for a week, then the doctors realized there wasn’t any point of keeping her on it. She, uh died.” “Oh my God!” I was shocked. “She was nine?!” He nodded. “We were going through a name change at the time, anyway. So we decided to name the band after Noah.” “I can’t imagine how Taylor must feel,” I thought out loud. “He’s still sad, it seems,” Jonathan said, frowning. “Those two were really close.” He pulled out his phone and showed me a picture of a little girl. “This is her about a month before she got sick.” Noah had had curly light-brown hair, blue-grey eyes and flawless skin. She was smiling wide, Taylor standing in the background giving her bunny ears. Noah was adorable. “She was a sweetheart,” Jonathan laughed. “You would have loved her.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~-
