Chapter 4- Confrontation Ever had one of those moments when you’re sitting at the table with your dad, and its awkward because you know you have something important to tell him? That’s what was going on in this scenario. My dad and I were sitting at the table alone, I juggled a Monster in my hands while he sat there, staring at the Monster, hands folded. “Okay, spill it!” He finally broke the silence. I just stared blankly at the energy drink. “Skye Devyn! I know that look on your face, what is it?” I had to spill my guts once he said my middle name. “I’m having someone over,” I finally announced. “Well that’s fine. Who is she?” “He,” I corrected. My father looked straight at me. “He’d better be gay,” He muttered. “Dad! He’s as straight as a pole!” I argued. “Poles can be curved.” I shot him a look. “We wanted to talk to you about something.” “If you’re pregnant, I swear-” “Dad!” I interrupted . “I’m not pregnant! Just call me Virgin Mary!” There was a knock at the door. Jonathan. “Is that him?” Asked my dad. I got up to get the door without answering the question. “I’ll get my rifle!” Said my dad, getting up. I rolled my eyes and didn’t say anything. When I opened the door, Jonathan had his hands in his pockets and a serious expression on his face. “Should I get ready to run for dear life?” He asked. He must have heard my father say he would get his gun(He always has that thing in the house, loaded). I laughed a bit. “No, he won’t kill you. Come on in.” My dad approached as Jonathan and I were in the kitchen. Page 15 “Hello, sir. I wanted to introduce myself, I’m Jonathan Murray,” Jonathan politely greeted my father. They shook hands. “Jason Kaighn. Its good to meet you, Jonathan,” My dad acknowledged him. So far, so good. The three of us sat down at the kitchen table, Jonathan and I across from my dad. “You must like my daughter if you came to our home,” He said seriously to Jonathan. “I do a lot. We met in the park and I thought she was cool. She’s so sweet and down to earth. Beautiful and honest,” He answered. I could see my dad trying to hide a smile. Jonathan stared down at his feet. “I’d like to have a relationship with her,” He finally finished. My dad looked from me to Jonathan, then back at me. “Skye,” He said. “I’d like to talk to Jonathan alone. I Looked at Jonathan, he didn’t loom nervous. “Its okay,” He assured me. I left the kitchen and stood in the next hallway to eavesdrop. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Jonathan ~~~~~~~~ Skye left the room and I was alone with her dad. Oh man! I thought to myself. No other girl I’ve ever gone out with had a dad who did this. It sounds cliché, I know, but Skye isn’t like the other girls either. “Skye’s thirteen, Jonathan,” Her dad began. “She’s already been through so much. She’s a cancer survivor, her mother passed away of the same cancer just two years ago. Did you know those things?” I nodded. He frowned and continued. “I haven’t seen Skye truly happy in I don’t know how long. The last she needs right now is to get hurt.” “Mr. Kaighn, I-” “Jason,” He cut me off. “Jason,” I continued. “I promise you that I would never hurt Skye. Page 16 I know everyone says that, but I mean it.” There was a slight moment of silence. Skye’s dad was staring at his hands. ********, I’ve done it now! I was thinking. “Here’s the limitations,” He started. I knew that was a yes. “Yes, thank you!” I exclaimed. He laughed and continued. “No kissing in front of me, you guys can be in her room as long as the door is open, absolutely nothing over PG-13 if you know what I mean.” “Of course, thank you so much!” I thanked him and shook his hand. Skye ran in the room and hugged Jason. “Thank you, dad!” She thanked him. He laughed as she let go of him. I came up behind Skye, wrapped my arms around her waist, and sunk my face into her silky smooth hair. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
