Chapter 2: First Sight
Music was blasting out from the club. We walked close together and were all giggling as Jamie and Jessie argued about the school lunch. “I’m telling you we need better lunch. I was telling Sarah that this morning! That meatloaf the other day! I swear to you! It was breathing!” Jamie shouted. We all burst out laughing. “My theory is that the lunch ladies kill animals back there.” Ella gasped. “Yeah, but they don’t even kill them the right way. I think they’re still alive.” Jessie announced. Ella stuck out her tongue in disgust. “Animal Cruelty.” Misha said. I nodded. “But seriously, that’s nasty.” Misha continued. She shivered and I smiled. “Ella go protest!” I teased. Ella laughed sarcastically, but nodded. She held up her fists. “Someone’s gotta protect their rights! I gotta save all those poor creatures that are slaughtered for no reason! At least if you’re going to kill something kill it all the way!” Ella shouted. I pointed to her and the girls looked at me. “Her slogan.” I said. Jamie laughed. “I’m more or less the kind of girl that says, if you’re gonna kill it at least use it for something while you’re at it. I think I was an Indian in a past life.” Jamie said. Jessie high-fived her and I nodded. “That’s being conservative! See if only the rest of the world was like that.” Misha shouted. We were in the club now and making our way to the bar. “Recycling! Nobody even listens to that crap.” Misha said. “I still see people dump their crap everywhere but the garbage can.” Ella said. “I saw someone beat up a bum once.” Jamie said. We all looked at her and she shrugged. “What, our conversation was dumb. I spiced it up a bit.” She said. We all considered her words and nodded. Jamie smiled. “As long as we don’t dump stuff on the ground all is good right girls?” Ella asked. We all stared at her. “That’s why we have those nature people pick up after us. Just because there’s garbage everywhere doesn’t mean I follow the rules either.” Jamie said. Jessie nodded and pointed to her. “She really doesn’t” she said. Ella gasped and hit Jamie’s arm playfully. I laughed. “I’m hungry.” Jessie groaned. I rolled my eyes. “I’ve gotta save up for winter. Gosh! You people act like you don’t do the same.” Jessie said. Misha patted Jessie’s belly. “But where does it go? She’s flat.” Misha said. Jessie groaned and Misha laughed. We then went quiet for a few minutes and watched as people danced around us. “Well ladies, let’s go and have some fun!” Ella shouted, thus breaking the short silence. We nodded and started to party. Jessie and Jamie skipped off to the dance floor. Misha dragged me to the drinks stand, while Ella talked to the bartender. Teens were everywhere. It was crazy. The lights were flashing all over the place and people all around us were screaming and singing. The dance floor was crowded and I could barely make out Jessie and Jamie. “Hotties!” Misha shouted. “Hotties alert!” Misha shouted. She started making beeping sounds as she pointed to the new faces that entered the bar. These boys were all pale. They were all tall too. On top of all that, they were all muscular, though none could compare to the long haired one. One boy, looked like he was the youngest. He was blonde and he had dark brown eyes. The boy in front of him was also blonde, though his hair showed signs of brown in it too. Blonde and brown mixed. He had blue eyes and I smiled a little. The last boy was bigger than the others, but not in weight, but in muscle. He seemed like the oldest and he had long hair that stopped around the end of his neck. He had ivory colored eyes. “Cute.” I said smiling. The blue eyed one caught my eyes and I blushed and looked away quickly. “Blue eyes is looking right at you. Plus he’s smiling.” Misha said. I gripped her arm and she looked at me. “Look away.” I warned. Misha rolled her eyes and smiled. “He’s talking to the blonde one, and now they’re smiling. Oh! They’re both looking at you!” Misha said happily. She turned to me and held my hands. “We should so talk to them!” she said. I shook my head. “No freaking way!? Are you insane?” I said. Misha frowned. “Why not?! They like you!” Misha said. I shook my head. “You want Ella to go with you?” Misha asked. I glared at her and Misha let me go. “I’m going to tell Jessie!” she said. Before I could grab her, she was running into the dance floor and pushing people out of her way. She even ran right through a couple that was dancing together. I felt so bad. Before I knew it, I couldn’t find Misha anymore. Ella danced over to me and held my hands. Her hair was all over her face and she shook her head quickly so it could fall back to her back. She smiled at me. “Hot guys in the club!” she sang. “Love in this club!” she continued. I rolled my eyes and pulled my hands away from hers. “Not you too.” I said. Ella frowned and then raised her brow. “What are you talking about?” she asked. “They did something to you?” Ella asked. She pointed to the three cute guys and I shook my head. “No! It’s just Misha, you know what? Nothing!” I said. Ella nodded slowly. I laughed nervously and then went to the bathroom. Ella stared off after me, curious and I thought she was following me. When I glanced over my shoulder, she was heading into the dance floor. I washed my face once in the bathroom and gripped the sink. A group of girls walked in and they were squealing about some cute guy. “Have you seen them?” One girl asked. I glanced at her. “I hear they go to Wings Academy for the guys!” the girl continued. “I’ve never seen such handsome boys!” a girl said. The other girls nodded and I gripped my head. Here we go, I thought. Even little kids are talking about them! I need air. I ran out the bathroom and almost fell. White hands shot out for me and stopped me. They then twirled me around to face the person. My jaw dropped and I was in shock. “You okay?” the blue eyed boy asked. I nodded slowly and tried to tell my brain to close my mouth. “You must have been doing eighty.” The boy joked. I closed my mouth and laughed nervously. In my head, it sounded weird and choked up, and I felt embarrassed. What if he’d heard it that way too? I shivered at the thought. “Well try not to fall.” He warned. He turned and walked into the Men’s room. I stood in the middle of the two bathrooms. People rushed past me and I felt like the only idiot. I walked slowly over to a table and sat down. My head was spinning and I wasn’t even sure why. I glanced at the other boys and saw that they were both suddenly tense. They split up. The blonde one went over to the front entrance and walked outside. The long haired one walked over to the back entrance and looked around. The blue eyed prince walked out of the bathroom quickly and walked quickly over to the side entrance. He pushed a group of girls apart gently and they stared at him, stunned by his beauty. I placed my head in my hands and sighed. I must have stayed like that for hours. All I could remember was that the music started to lower and when I looked up, the bar was nearly empty. I stood up, and scanned the room for the girls. When I saw they weren’t there, I started panicking. “Where are they?” I whispered. I walked around the club and checked out every face. But, I had no luck. “They left me?!” I whispered. I shook my head and looked at my phone. It was ten minutes to eleven and I sighed. I sucked my teeth and went for the front entrance. I opened the door and almost knocked over a plant in the process. I quickly caught it before it fell and placed it back on the stand before I turned and started walking down the street. It was surprisingly cold outside and I hugged myself to keep warm. It was late and hardly anyone was outside. I walked onto a street and there was a group of three men standing in a circle. I walked quickly past them and they froze. One of them, the tallest one started sniffing and the others turned to look after me. “Hey!” one of them called in a scratchy voice. I walked a little faster and that wasn’t the best idea. My pumps weren’t exactly agreeing with me and I nearly tripped a few times. I turned on an abandoned street and practically ran down the street. Suddenly, the lights went out and I gasped. I stopped walking and turned around. Only the moonlight shined down on the street, and provided me with minimum light. I reached for my flashlight in my pocket and took it out. I turned it on and the battery died. I groaned and heard laughing. I froze. “She’s trying to see!” a voice boomed. I shivered and started walking slowly down the street. “Hey! Wait up!” the voice called. I turned and saw a man walking up the block toward me. I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes and turned quickly. Just a few feet away from me stood the tall man. In the moonlight, I could see that he was smiling darkly at me. I heard laughter coming from the side and turned to the side. I stared into a dark alley way and tried to make out shapes. Suddenly, two piercing red eyes glared at me from the darkness and I gasped in horror. “Why are you running?” the man in front of me asked. I looked at him and my tears welled over. He was growling and I could see fangs in his mouth. I turned and ran across the street. I let out a scream as I slipped on the curb and fell flat on my face. I landed on my right knee and I felt the pain shoot up from my knee. I stood up and moaned as the pain in my knee throbbed. I touched it lightly and felt that it was bleeding. “That sure smells good.” One of the men said darkly. The others started sniffing and I stood up quickly. I ran down the street and turned the corner. I wasn’t sure what to do, and I searched my bag for my phone. I didn’t know any self-defense, and even if I did, I would be too scared to know what to do. I had never been in the situation I was in now. All I could think about was my friends and what they would be saying to me. I gripped my phone in my hands and opened it. I started dialing Misha’s number and when I was done I raised it to my ear. Misha picked up the phone. “Sarah, I thought you went home!” Misha said. I started crying hysterically and I heard Misha switch to her worried voice. “What’s wrong?” she asked. “I’m being followed by these three scary men, and I don’t know what to do!” I shouted. The hysteria in my voice made my tears come faster. I wiped the tears from my eyes as I limped down the street as quickly as I could. The pain in my knee was throbbing and I started wondering if I had a glass shard or something in it. “Is someone there with you?! Is anyone around?!” Misha shouted. In the background I heard the girls suddenly break out into whispers. “What’s wrong?” I heard Jessie say barely. She sounded like she had been laughing and I figured that maybe Misha had an expression that made the phone call sound like it was a joke. I started hyperventilating and I was struggling to breathe. “The streets are empty Misha! I’m so scared!” I cried. Misha was trying to say things to me and that’s when I heard a ferocious growl coming from behind me. I froze in my tracks when I saw a man walk out from the corner I was heading for. I couldn’t make out his face, but he looked like he was one of the men in the group. I was frozen in place and I heard Misha’s frantic voice shouting at me. The other girls were probably yelling at her. I could hear Jamie shouting. I stared across the street as one of the men strolled down it and stopped just in front of me. I felt like someone was behind me and I turned slowly. I raised my phone with me, and I felt like I was going to get arrested because I was moving my hands behind my head. My left hand gripped my hair tightly and the pain in my knee started making my whole leg weak. I put my phone to my ear and the tears started coming down faster. I was staring into the eyes of a crazed man. A crazed, angry man with angry red eyes that seemed to glow. “Please…help me…” I whispered. “Sarah! Sarah! What’s going on?!” Misha screamed now. I could feel my grip on my phone slipping and my whole body felt weak. I felt nauseas. The man reached for my phone and snatched it out of my hand. He then raised it to his ear and heard Misha screaming into hers. “Sarah!? Where the hell are you?! We’re coming to get you! Sarah answer me!” Misha’s voice shouted. The man looked at my phone quickly, but then looked back at me. The man at the end of the block chuckled and I turned to him quickly. My hair sprang to my face and some even went in my mouth. I then turned back quickly to the man in front of me when I heard something crumbling in his hand. I was sweating and my tears made my hair glue to my face. I gasped as my phone was crushed and pieces of it fell to the ground. The man stared at the tiny fragments of my phone in his hand and looked at me. He shook his hand so the rest of my phone fragments fell. I could feel the tears streaming down my face. I felt like a running waterfall. My head was hurting because I was crying so much. I tried to speak, but my throat was tight. “Please…” I whispered and then stopped as I tried to say other words. “Don’t, don’t hurt me.” I begged. The men chuckled darkly and looked at each other quickly. “Let’s kill her!” the man across the street shouted. I flinched at the way he said the words. The man in front of me raised his finger to him and I tried my best not to get distracted and look at him. The man then leaned closer to me and bore his fangs at me. I whined a little and covered my mouth. “You should’ve stopped when we told you to.” He whispered each word slowly. I stepped back and the man stepped forward. I turned and ran into the middle of the street. They all took a step toward me and that made me cry a little more than I already was. I felt like I was going to pass out. Then, I heard the tires of a car screech to a stop. I looked and saw a car with headlights flashing in my face come toward me. I screamed as it came closer and covered my head. I nearly fell too. The car stopped like a few feet away from me and I looked at it. The lights were so strong that they blinded me. The car door opened and someone stepped in front of the lights. I tried to make out the person but I couldn’t. The lights were far to strong. I was surprised that the three men could see well. “Get in.” the person ordered. I looked at the men around me and they were frozen in place. I looked back at my hero, I guess, and limped slowly over to him. As I got closer I saw that it was the blue eyed boy from the club. He walked in front of me and guided me by pushing me gently toward the passenger seat. He opened the door for me and I got in. He then walked over to his side. “My brothers will deal with you boys.” The boy said. He turned and got in the car. W e drove in silence down the now empty streets. The men far behind us. I wiped the tears from my eyes and then started to wipe the sweat from my forehead. The blue eyed boy then looked at my leg. I looked at it too. In the limited light, I saw that I had a gash running across my knee cap. It was bleeding and stung like crazy. “I’m going to the hospital.” He said. I shook my head and tried to find my voice. “No, just take me to the school. There’s an infirmary there.” I said. The boy looked at me and studied my face. “You’re bleeding. It looks bad.” He said. I nodded and went to touch it. His hand shot out and pulled my hand back. He then pulled his hand back and placed it on one of the gears. “You don’t want to touch it. It could get infected.” He said. I nodded and felt really stupid. The boy sighed and looked out his window. “Wings Academy right?” he asked. I nodded. I hadn’t noticed it, but we were pulling into the infirmary’s parking lot and the boy parked in the middle of the lot. He got out first and then opened my door. He helped me out and when I was on my own two feet I turned and smiled at him weakly. “Thank you.” I said. I turned and limped to the infirmary. The pain in my leg increased and I staggered. My pumps almost made me fall and the boy sighed. Before I knew it he was cradling me in his arms. “You can’t even walk straight. I told you that you should’ve gone to the hospital.” He said. I was too shocked to say anything. I was in the arms of a boy I had just met only a few hours ago. I could imagine what Jamie would say if she saw me.
