In my element
Yesterday was a great anime-watching day.

I finally registered on CR the day before, despite me sneaking around watching their vids for ages!

I watched Winter Garden despite comments that it was boring, I found it refreshing and sweet. A nice slice-of-life that reminded me a lot of Byousoku 5 cm and other titles by Makoto Shinkai.
Hard to imagine such a nice drama OVA is actually a spin-off of Digi Charat. Only the names gave it away for me....

I searched around the site a bit after that and found Doujin Work. Which, if my anime genre taste and humour could be embodied in one overall package, this would be it. Simply, simply loved it. I could barely breathe for laughing.

I think I haven't found something so delightfully random and silly since Excel Saga.
Speaking of Excel Saga, I recently heard Watanabe (ie. Nabeshin) gave his voice briefly in an episode of Mahoromatic. I must remember to check that. The character probably has an afro as most of his characters do.

Anyway back on the topic, after enjoying Doujin Work so much I got hiccups, I decided to knock off more of my list. Paramount to me was Steel Angel Kurumi Zero, despite generally hard to find I decided to finally watch it. As Steel Angel Kurumi is my most favourite anime of all time it may come as a surprise I had never watched the Zero OVAs...

reason being I was starving myself off on purpose, patiently waiting for licensing so I could experience it fresh on DVD. Obviously my hopes of licensing had been dashed long ago with both ADV and (closer-to-home) Madman ignoring Zero being part of Steel Angel Kurumi at all by releasing a full boxset of the first and second seasons. But, I still held off nervous, knowing it is the worst installment and that it may ruin my beloved characters.

I waited for the first OVA to load and actually got a little teary, most of my dearest memories involve Kurumi in some way and I guess I was getting a little nostalgic.

I'll agree with the general concensus that it wasn't the best. A rather sombre addition, the characters were nearly completely adverse to how they were portrayed in season 1 (and later season 2). Saki had no romantic attachment to Kurumi and was actually quite sedate, Kurumi lacked any enthusiasm at all and sadly doesn't squeal her trademark Kyuiiiin! once in the storyline.

My enthusiasm on the other hand really didn't falter and I really liked this insight into the characters. I felt the eerie warning about the secret horror of hikikomori that was touched on in the plot and it made me feel cold, as a Westerner I can only comprehend so much without being exposed to the situation myself but any mention of it reminds me that the West is not far off something similar with future youth...

Doesn't it scare you that such regiment and pressure can lead to such dark outcomes as high suicide rates, mental instability and brutal murder?

Look at Hiroyuki Tsuchida and Tsutomu Miyazaki...there are too many to mention, this is why Japanese horror scares me the most... the crimes come from most creative, goriest imagination and has that edge that they could never be far off reality.

As previously mentioned Miyazaki is the main reason I will never watch Flower of Flesh and Blood.

----

After, I watched Dog Star which was a simply lovely Japanese movie about a dog turning into a man to pursue the woman he loves. It was a change from the horror and gore I'm partial to at the moment, I cried through the most of the last fifteen minutes. A romance with a difference, really original and thought-provoking. It gave my brain a break.

This morning I watched The Doll Master a Korean horror that wasn't as suspenseful or shockingly gory as I had expected. Forum posters on Bloody Asia were making me feel a little anxious about watching it as I imagined Guinea Pig level of shocking visuals.

It had more of an implied scary feel but overall, weak...I was let down by it really, it was hyped up too much. I did love the dolls in it though, the ball-jointed ones.. made me love my Marin a little bit more seeing the doll's discarded.

I'm about to watch Welcome to the NHK and then because I love android maids Moetan is on the list next.
