Chapter I: To wed or not to wed
He knew that he was awake, and yet his eyes were still closed. Where was he? Wait, an organ was playing, he must be in a church. A funeral, maybe? No, the music was too joyful. He opened his eye and sighed for that meant he was at the celebration opposite. Marriage. His mother's wedding. Mr. Morrison's wife had died 5 or 6 years ago and barely a year had passed since the boy's father had died. Just enough time for Mr. Morrison to court his mother and then, finally, to pop the question. The boy's name was Aaron. He was sitting in a church pew wearing a tuxedo and, not to mention, his bow tie was strangling him. That, or the thought of watching his mom beam as Morrison prepared to tie the knot made it feel like they were tying it around his neck. So, as you've probably guessed, Aaron wasn't exactly having the best of days. A girl to his left leaned toward him and hissed, "You were asleep again, weren't you?" He didn't bother nodding and rubbed his eyes. She seemed to switch her attention back to the alter, but he could tell she was watching him. He yawned as the bride and groom waited patiently to recite their vows and the girl smacked him. "What the hell was that for, April?" he demanded in as loud of a whisper as is possible in such a situation. "You should at least try to be somewhat respectable." A round, little lady in the pew ahead of them turned. "She's right you know, Aaron." April relaxed and gave him an I-told-ya-so look out of the corner of her eye. "But that doesn't mean you actually have to," the lady added. April's jaw dropped and the lady winked at Aaron. "Aunt Cathy!" April scolded but her aunt had already gone back to facing front. Aaron slid down until he couldn't see anything except the back of Ms. Cathy's pew. April hesitated and then copied him so she wouldn't have to watch everyone's fake happiness anymore. "Are you going to the reception?" she asked while he stared definately at the wood before him. "Why bother?" "Well, for starters, because my parents are making me go." "Then you go, April," he said, bored. "...I am going." "Then what're you trying to say?" She sighed and he tensed since his mother had started her vows. "That you should go so then I'm not eternally bored out of my mind." "Fine I'll go," he said distractedly, saying it just for the sake of saying it. "But not for long." "Why not?" He didn't answer. "Why not?' she repeated and he shushed her, motioning in the direction of the alter. "I think that's the same vow my mom used for her and my dad's wedding." April's eyes widened and she peeked over the top of the pew. "No way!" She looked at Aaron. "But isn't that illegal, or something?" He shrugged as best he could in his current position. "Maybe, but no one from the original wedding is here to say so." "No way!" she repeated. Then she added more calmly, "How do you know?" "My mom and dad eloped," Aaron explained and sat up a little to get a better view. "Well...wow." He nodded and his mom uttered the last word. "Wait," April said, suddenly realizing something. "How could you recognize the vows if no one----?" "Shut up! Shut up!" yelled her aunt Cathy when she spun to face them again. "Here's the ending!" Aaron tilted his head in puzzlement but the aunt was already gone. April leaned over to him to whisper, "Don't take it personally, she tends to have a lot of mood swings like that." He nodded once and she backed away though he didn't really want her to. "You may now kiss the bride!" the priest declared with shining eyes. Aaron immediately slid back down so he wouldn't have to watch it. April's was more similar to a glide when she came down to join him. "Now for the reception," she said as if she was excited. "Now for the reception," he echoed blandly.
