This was originally a post I made in the LD forum, but it kinda tured into an essay, so I thought I'd post it here:
I can understand how in the past, the Christian faith taught people to wait untill they were legally bound before they started having sex- because when children were created (because of the lack of contraception) there would be someone around to be legally responsible for those children. Thus, sex away from the institution of marriage was taught to be "dirty" and "wrong" because it resulted in poor unwanted children. Which was fine.
But nowadays, we have contraception that is 99% effective, and the risk of actually reproducing is very slim. So now we can safely play around a bit before we finally meet person we think we truly love- because sometimes we think we've found "Mr Right" when infact he's just another jock. Yeah, I appreciate that even when you use the pill there's still a chance of getting pregnant, you just have to be mature enough to take that chance.
Repressing sex in the first place was a stupid idea by the church, because it's a natural part of human behaviour, and sooner or later everyone's going to do it- like animals. The perception of virginity as something "special" is purely dependant on the "owner" of said virginity. A person is still a person, whether they have had sex or not and (men particularly) should not be out looking for a cherry to pop in a big white dress and veil.
Then there's the problem of the honeymoon- it's a very bad time to find out that your spouse is a bad love-maker, since sex is a big part of any adult relationship. Some people may express wishes and behaviours during sex that you find uncomfortable or bizarre, and many "happy" marriages have had problems because of this.
