Ok, everyone knows that religion and philosophy are hobbies of mine, right? Well, for a while now, I've been frequently visiting websites of really religious fanatics (specifically Christian fundamentalists) and at the same time observing the attitudes of atheists. And I have concluded that there is actually little difference in the attitudes of those two opposite groups! It's so weird. Both are 100% sure that their point of view is correct- but neither give any real evidence (though both say that their ideas are supported by "science" wink . Basically, both of them appear to do a lot of name calling- the religious ones say that the atheists are immoral, hateful people and the atheists say the religious guys are a bunch of mindless, brain washed idiots with imaginary friends.
I think this happens a lot- not just with religion, but with politics as well. If two opposite groups get radical enough, they become pretty similar (Communism and Fascism are supposedly on opposite ends of the political spectrum, but was there really much difference between the regimes of Stalin and Hitler?)
Sometimes, I think Chekhov was smart- he was one of those guys who thought it best not to be connected with a specific "ism"- followers of such philosophies seem to believe that they have all the answers when, let's face it, there are tons of things in this world and outside of it that we don't know and may never know.
My personal opinion is that a person's life should be balanced. For example, you should trust science, but that doesn't mean there's no room for religion, and vise versa. The problems arise when you go the extremes. At that point, one may think they have all the answers, when in truth, it become very little but ad hominem attacks...
That's just what I've observed and I thought I'd throw it out there.
