The earth and its state isn't really a philosophical topic, but it is an issue of moral and logical choice. I am a proud environmentalist, so I wanted to open this thread to discussions and comments about the earth and its creatures' health.

Post facts, share stories or events, or maybe what you are doing to help save the world, its wildlife, and our species from imminent struggle and possible extinction.

(No haters, please. You all have caused enough trouble. And please have back-up for any apposing arguments you might have.)

True progress and change only come from clear thinking, open minds, and careful observation.

I am never going to use a buss when I can use a car. I already do all of the other stuff, but I don't want to wait for a buss to come, then wait for it to make all its stops before it makes mine, when I could just take a car and drive there. OF course I am too young to drive, but that is where I stand and that is where I will stand when I cna drive.

As for energy efficent bulbs I feal obligated to do it, since its so simple, so I will.

Recycling is a pain, but doesen't take much time so I'll do that.

I'll buy whatever I want, and besides I mostly eat fish.

ummm...a bus is not only better for the environment, but is more affordable. but if you'd rather pay 15K for a car, and then $40 every time you fill the tank, and several hundred on insurance, than pay a buck for bus fare, i guess that's your right.
PostPosted: Tue Aug 07, 2007 7:45 pm

It's just when I wait for the buss its like waiting for the man. I just can't shake off that fealing. Secondly I am going to car pool with people at my work when I get one(I'm too young to legally have one yet, so I am waiting untill I can), which is almost as good for the enviorment as a buss. Lastly I am going to get an electric car.

Also I don't mind paying the insurence, as long as I can afford it which I can if I work hard enough. And I am pretty sure I can charge it with some sort of clean source, like if I wind up living in a sunny place I will try to afford a small solar pannel for the roof of the car. It wouldnt cover all the power needed but it would help lol.

Dude I know a bunch of old yet still usefull techniques for the enviorment, cause when I was like 6-7 one of the only shows I was alloud to watch was captain planet. THe other four where full house, the cosby show, gillagans island, and the braidy bunch. It was like in the late 90's and we didn't have cable.

Heres some of the ones that come to mind.

WHen your starting a fire int eh woods, dig a small round campfire sided whole, put wood in the whole, put peaces of discarded paper and cardboard to start the fire, and cover the whole with dirt when you are done. The fire in the whole keeps it away from the wind, so that way sparks dont fly off and start a forest fire.

When you are throwing away/recycling those plastic wrings that come on the top of eight packs of refreshment cans, put one cut in each wring with scisiors, so the plastic thing doesent kill animals. They migh choke on it.

When throwing thigns away, have one trash can for glass, one trash can for plastic, one trash can for cardboard, paper, and wood, and one trash can for anything else. The first three are only for the recycling, and the last one goes straight to the dump.

If you see a forest fire( or any other kind of fire) don't put it out yourself, unless its in the forest and it has a diameter of no more than one foot. If it is in the city, indoors, or anywhere else besides the forest, it could be an electricle fire, and water could make it worse. IF it isn't in the forest, or if it is too big to handle in the forest, seek professionals as fast as possible, and don't stop for anythign else.

WHen in the forest, or a place you are unfamiliar with, always know exactly where the professionalls are, that would be forest rangers, poliece, firemen, a hospital or anythign else like htat, because even though hospitals, forest rangers, and poliece stations don't have the proper equipment to put out a forest fire, they have direct access to people who do.

WIth your family always decide on a place to meet up if fire strikes in your house. It could be a tree, a bush, a rocky place, as long as it is outside adn easy to get to. Don't grab anything, just yell as loud as you can four times that their is a fire, and run out. If their is smoke crawl under as standing up could suffocate you. Touch a door and feal the doornob before going through, to indicate if their is fire on the other side. If you arn't carefull you ming open a door to a firey death. Always buy fireproof beds.

IF an animal wanders near your home, somone elses home, ora populated erea, call animal controll immediatly, don't try to deal with that animal, as it might have rabies. Also you might hurt it more than it hurts you.

i remember captain planet...

you're too young to drive, but old enough to remember that show? how's that possible? i was like...three when that show ended and i'm eighteen now.

as for electric cars - be careful which ones you get. some of them are actually WORSE for the environment. for example, the prius (sp?) uses a lead/acid/mercury compound battery which is actually more dangerous to dispose of than it is to use a gas-guzzler SUV. additionally, if you get in a serious accident, the EMTs aren't likely to save you, because there's a higher chance that they will get electrocuted and die along with you. lastly, the batteries cost like $3000-$5000, and they only last a third as long as the life of an average car, so unless you're leasing, not only are you going to pay for an expensive car and expensive insurance, but also add on $12000-$15000 extra for batteries. a normal car battery costs about $60, btw.

i'd much rather use public transportation. unfortunately, i live in maine, and the state is so empty that there is no public transportation...

Yeah I was born in 94, and we didn't have cable when I was like five, six, and seven so all we had to watch was a bunch of old shows, really late at night, cause we where busy all day. IT was all reruns and stuff.

ah, reruns... the only thing worse than tv is re-packaging it and selling it under the label "re-runs"

There are!! I swear there are. Like.. the ones that don't test on animals, and the ones that use earth-friendly materials. They're out there, and becoming more and more accesible.

Damn.. you are young.
Don't worry, darling, everything will come together.

And no.. a car for one person to go back and forth daily is not nearly as good for the environment as a bus, which runs anyways.

But it is your choice. Where do you live, if you don't mind me asking?

look into what? the info i posted on the prius? it was in an article, they compared the prius to some gas guzzler...i think it mighta been the H3 actually. if i can remember what magazine, i'll post which one and which issue.

but yeah, those lead/acid/mercury batteries are EXTREMELY toxic to the environment, and have to be disposed of VERY VERY VERY carefully. and, i mean, they're HUGE and hard to dispose of properly.
