So, I just set up my first African rift lake cichlid tank (55 gallons), and I'm adding cichlids in a couple of days. I'm cycling the tank with BIOspira, and I currently have 6 danios, just to add ammonia to feed the bacteria. (I'm only keeping the danios for a week or so, them I'm bringing them back to the store) Anyways, here's what I plan to get: -Ocellated Shell-dwellers ( Julidochromis ocellatus) (1 male, 2 females) -Electric Yellows ( Labidochromis caeruleus) -Fairy Cichlids ( Neolamprologus brichardi) -Rusty Cichlids ( Iodotropheus sprengerae) Tank Set-up and Water ChemistrypH: 8.0-8.2 Ammonia: 0ppm-.25ppm GH: 12, a little too soft. The average temp. is about 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Discuzzle: -My tank

dont know if it will work, becuse the shell dwellers need sand while the rest need rocks. on another not you got bigger aggresive fish with small counterparts. But also i am not as smart about african rift lake fish compared to other ones. I hope it all goes well for you and this aqaurium.

But also i am not as smart about african rift lake fish compared to other ones. I hope it all goes well for you and this aqaurium. I have a coral sand substrate with a clear sandy area with shells in the middle (for the shell dwellers), and the rest is rocky. I asked a guy at my local fish store about keeping the shell dwellers with the other cichlids, and he said that they should be fine. Anyways, fairy cichlids and electric yellows are generally less aggressive than most other rift lake fish (or so I've heard), and they are both 4" and under. My tank has tons of caves and hiding places, so I bet they'll be fine. If things don't work out, I do have an empty Nano Cube sitting in the basement... xd

This is my entire tank. *Note the caves, they took me an hour and a half to build. This is where the shell dwellers will live. Yes, there is more than one shell.

I added my first few fish... three shell-dwellers and one medium sized electric yellow. Things have been going pretty well so far, there was some intitial aggression with the shell-dwellers, but they have settled down. The electric yellow is very shy and nervous, but I think it's because there are so few fish in the tank. I think that once I add more fish he will feel that the tank is safer.
Btw, does anyone know of a fairly nonaggressive, small blue cichlid that would work in my tank? Would a Lamprologus tretocephalus work, or would it be too aggressive?

I bought my Rusty Cichlid a week ago. He's pretty young (about 3" long) and doesn't have much color, but he's very healthy. Oddly, he's taken to hanging around with one of my Shell-dwellers. I lost one of my Shell-dwellers. I tested my water and everything was fine, but he had been looking sick lately. The rest of the fish are doing well, especially my Electric Yellow, he's grown. heart
