he did what he had to do because he made a promise in the 6th book.
1. if he didn't Melfoy would die 2. He would die and not be able to protect Melfoy from Voldemort 3. (trying not to say to much) He did what he had to because the person would die anyway. 4. He wouldn't hurt Harry because he has his mother's eyes. I'm pretty sure he loved Lilly Potter.
